Where I work (in Connecticut), we generally send patients home on plavix for 6 months to a year following a stent procedure. I guess different places do different things. You may also be asked to take aspirin as well. What's important is that you follow your doctor's instructions when taking any medication.

I've been on it daily since Nov, 2003 and I'll be taking Plavix the rest of my life.

Your Dr will guide you on how long you will have to take it.

If I may add this, once you stop taking the medication, if your heart symptoms return do not hesitate to let your Dr know. I was on Plavix for 6 months following a stent procedure as mentioned. I ran out of the original prescription and did nothing to get it renewed mainly because it is so darn expensive and the Dr's never indicated that I should be on it any longer.. Inside of one month after running out my symptoms returned. I eventually had to have bypass surgery and along with some other meds I need the Plavix/aspirin combo to sustain my life.

I haven't the heart attack but I was placed on Plavix several years ago. I also take one Aspirin with breakfast, watch my fat intake and eat plenty of veggies, fish, fruit & whole grains and try to get in a good long walk every day. I was told I'd probably on Plavix for the rest of my life?
FYI: Plavix is now available in generic form....saves lots of $$$$

We usually send patients home with Plavix after they have had a stenting procedure. They are on it for 30 days unless the doc has different plans. The surgeons hate the stuff because of the bleeding time issues so depending on the condition of the patient and the plans...like anything...it's subject to change.

Hope this helps. Jeff the nurse in Nashville

I have been on Plavix for almost a year, and I think it's a case of when your cardiologist tells you to come off it, I have known people be on it for life.
