The mountain lion is a predator and has few enemies. The mountain lion isn't eaten through everybody, yet is hunted through people for its fur. even even with the undeniable fact that mountain lions at the on the spot are not eaten, they eat many stuff. Deer, elk, raccoons, and different animals are hunted through the mountain lion.

The mountain lion was almost exterminated in the US, because it was considered a pest animal. In the east the main surviving population is in Florida. In the west there are more of them, but the population has declined until recently. In California a bounty was paid for mountain lions until 1963 and there were even professional state hunters. By 1976 the state population was estimated to be about 1000. Gradually people realized that the lions were giving a valuable service in keeping the deer population down and the bounties were removed. In 1990 the mountain lion was given a protected status (no hunting allowed). The present state population is believed to be around 5000.
Because the mountain lion has such a large territory and because human development is occuring so rapidly in California, encounters between mountain lions and people are increasing. The mountain lion rarely attacks people, but in 1994 two women were killed by mountain lions in separate attacks (for perspective, think of how many people are killed each year by other people). Recommended behavior if you spot a mountain lion close-up is:
Turn to face it
Make yourself look as large as possible- raise your hands
Don't run
Because of these problems an effor is being made to find out the best way to manage the mountain lion and to monitor its population. Because mountain lions are rarely seen it is difficult to measure the population. One method being tried is to follow them with special hounds, anesthetize them with dart guns and then put on radio collars that allow them to be followed by radio. This is expensive and not too effective.
Another approach is being developed at the University of California, Davis, by K. Shawn Smallwood and his co-workers. He uses the ancient art of animal tracking. Experts cannot identify individual lions by just looking at tracks, but Smallwoood has shown that it is possible to identify individual mountain lions from their tracks if measurements are made of parts of the track. The tracks are traced or photographed and different measurements are made of widths and angles between parts of the print. Up to 9 different dimensions and angles are measured. The measurements of different tracks are then compared by a method callled discriminant analysis. It is possible to get nearly 100% accuracy in identifying individual lions in this way. This allows investigators to make an estimate of lion population from tracks. The method is cheap and accurate.

I'm sure somewhere, sometime, someone has eaten a mountain lion. I would not think they are hunted w/ great gusto, though, since they fight back.

Actually, they do here in Montana. I have never tried it, but I have been told they are very rich, and have a taste similar to wild boar. But I cannot say that i know it from experience.
