HPV is its own STD. Just like herpes, HIV, or any other STD. HPV is not caused by several STDs or not getting checked out.
Having an abnormal pap doesn't necessarily mean you have HPV. But, HPV does cause abnormal pap smears. I have personally had HPV for over 5 years. I have had two abnormal paps. The first one turned out to be pre-cancerous cells which eventually turned into cervical cancer. The second one, about a year and 1/2 later turned out to be absolutely nothing. My doctor told me that HPV can do that - make a pap smear come back abnormal when there is nothing wrong.
If you have had an abnormal pap smear make sure you ask your doctor exactly why it has come back abnormal. It could possibly be nothing, or, it could be something more serious like HPV.
***Also, please do not listen to Ganja. She is COMPLETELY wrong. HPV (Human papillomavirus) is NOT herpes. They are two completely different viruses. I would know because not only do I have HPV, I also have genital herpes. I am amazed how many people on this site confuse the two.

HPV, or human papillomavirus. Around 80% of the sexually active population will come into contact with HPV at some point in their lives, and most do not develop cancer because the virus either does not cause symptoms at all, or the symptoms that do develop are caught early and treated before they have a chance to progress. Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a group of more than 100 types of viruses, over 30 types can be passed from one person to another through sexual contact. Although HPVs are usually transmitted sexually, doctors cannot say for certain when infection occurred. Most HPV infections occur without any symptoms and go away without any treatment over the course of a few years. However, HPV infection sometimes persists for many years, with or without causing cell abnormalities.
Just because you've had an "Abnormal Pap" does not mean you have HPV. If you've had an abnormal pap your doctor will do another for a verification.

HPV is an STD all by itself. There are a lot of different strains of it and a few of them cause cervical cancer. If your pap is abnormal, it doesnt necessarily mean that you have HPV. There could be other reasons. If you have had a pap, that means you've been to the doctor, right? you should definitely make a list of questions to ask your doctor since they will probably know a lot more than anyone on here. They can test for HPV, and if you do not have it there is also a vaccine for it now.

HPV is an STD. There's many strains of it. For example, genital warts is one. But for the most part, HPV has no sypmtoms. Left untreated, it can cause cervical cancer. An abnormal pap probably means that you have HPV. If there's enough infected cells, your doctor will take action. First performing a biopsy (called a coploscopy), and then possibly removing the cells by freezing or laser. HPV is not cancer, but it can turn into cancer if left untreated.

HPV is also referred to as Herpes. It is itchy bumps that you get on your private areas that come and go. You can only get HPV from someone who has it AND has an outbreak at the time of sex. The part that is contagious is. . .this is gross. . . the stuff that leaks out of the bumps if you get it on your skin you too will have HPV. HPV is not curable but certain pills can be taken to reduce outbreaks. If a pap comes back abnormal the doctor should tell you why, they won't just tell you it's abnormal. I think it is like 1 in every 4 people have a STD and most don't even know it so it is very important to use protection.

A friend of mine has HPV, aka genital warts, and she explained everything to me...HPV is just a virus that cause unsightedly blisters on your genitals. It is basically harmless, especially on men, however, it can cause cervical cancer is left unchecked. The younger you are when you get it, the better the chances of your body growing immune to it, effectively being "cured" of it - meaning, you will always carry the virus, but you won't break out.
An abnormal pap doesn't mean you have it, but it is possible!! I hope this helps you out!! sorry so long...

hpv is human papilloma virus - commonly known as genetal warts. and no, it is one std by itself. it is incurable, but can be controlled to some degree with some new drugs on the market. untreated, it can cause cervical cancer. if your pap comes back abnormal, it does not mean that you have hpv, but it does mean that some of your cervical cells were not as they should be. your doc will have you back for a more thorough test. if you are afraid you have hpv, stop having intercourse and tell your doc to check you out. also, find out if any of your known partners have the std. gl

In most cases NO But your doctor should tell you this Information as to why it may come back abnormal, Can mean a number of things. That is why you should always go for your routine PAP each year, I DO, Now HPV is a virus that causes certain cancers of the cervix, WE WOMEN CAN ENCOUNTER THIS HPV BY HAVING UNPROTECTED SEX, MEN ARE CARRIERS OF MANY GERMS THAT MAY NEVER EFFECT/AFFECT THEM, BUT CAN PASS THESE GERMS ALONG TO ANY FEMALE THAT DOES NOT INSIST ON THEIR MALE PARTNER WEARING A CONDOM. TAKE CARE AND DO GO FOR YOUR YEARLY VISIT.
