Well, raising a lot of extra dairy cows does contribute to global warming by all the manure and methane gas they produce. It takes a lot of money to feed those cows, you are losing 90% of the energy cows eat, by transfering it to meat or a dairy source. And it is not very nice to make a cow stand in a cramped stall most of the time being milked. Cruel to the animals. Having said that, milk is not good for a body. It is for baby cow's not people. A lot of people are allergic or intolerant to cow's milk. (Lactose intolerance) Did you know that an 8 o.z. cup of milk has about a million pus cells in it? And what about all the hormones and antibiotics they pump into the animals? They aren't good for people either. The dairy industry would have you believe otherwise.
And lacto-ovo vegetarians eat dairy and eggs. A lacto vegetarian eats dairy but not eggs. Some vegetarians don't eat either. And some people are vegans, which is not only dietary but also a lifestyle choice, they don't wear clothing made from dead animals either. And eating an egg is like eating meat, whether or not the animal ever grew up or not. Chickens also live in poor cramped, unsanitary conditons. By eating eggs and drinking milk you support these practices to continue. Farming is rarely done by small farmers anymore. The farms are owned by huge corporations, whose bottom line is the all mighty dollar. The conditons and care of the animals is far down on the list of their priorities. Do you want to know more or is this sufficient light on the subject?

I was a vegan, then vegeterian and now I'm a full on carnivore.

In general it's vegans who don't drink milk, eat eggs or cheese, some won't even eat honey- all because it comes from an animal. It's an extremist view and most vegans understand that they're on the outer fringe... They're not doing it to piss you off, they've just made a choice not to consume or use ANYTHING that comes from an animal.

Vegeterians on the other hand just don't eat meat. There are even some vegeterians who will eat fish (even though to me- that's the muscle tissue of a living creatre= meat!).

Anyway- to some extent yes, meat eating does contribute to global warming- the world bovine population has exponentially grown all because of the mass-produced and consumed cattle- The increased numbers of bovine means increased CO2 and methane (farts!) in the atmosphere which helps create more ozone compound in the upper levels of the atmosphere leading to further degredation of the ozone layer.

A lot of extremist groups like PETA like to tell their members that milking is bad for cows, or that they're treated poorly... The fact of the matter is that if you don't milk a cow is extremely unhealthy for them- now should we go around drinking the biproduct? Well, that's up to each individual to decide. Dairy cows are kept in large pens, warehouses or simply on farms... in general they aren't treated poorly or injured in anyway (that's just PETA propoganda trying to incense their members)- Granted the living conditions aren't as nice as if they'd lived out in the wild and were roaming free but that just isn't how their situation worked out so there they are... and it's not all bad. No cow gets milked until it bleeds... No cow is beaten if it doesn't produce milk... You talk to any dairy farmer and they'll tell you that a dairy cow under stress won't produce milk... kind of like the commerical "Happy cows..." produce more milk.

Now, I'm not saying every cow, chicken, hog, duck, turkey, lamb... whatever... Is treated well, or at least as it should be... but in general most farmers are trying to make a profit- if they treat their livestock poorly then their product isn't going to be high quality and they'll lose money.

The whole egg debate though... I don't know. Eggs freak me out. I'm also not very fond of their texture or taste. But when I was vegan it was the same thing... It came from an animal so I wouldn't touch it never mind eat it. Chickens tend to have it a little tougher than the cows... they're usually kept in cages unless they're free-range chickens but even then their confined to indoor warehouses...

Anyway, I hope my ramblings have helped you to understand that it's an aglomeration of reasons why vegans and vegeterians don't eat meat, cheese, eggs, milk... whatever. It's lifestyle choice and each person has their own reasons for having made that decision.

Vegans don't drink or eat anything that has animal protein in it, like milk and eggs. Some do it for health reasons, others for moral reasons. They don't like the way cows are treated at dairy's, they are bred, produce a calf, then the calf is taken away from the cow and then the cow is treated like a milk machine rather than a living thing, and when it comes to chickens they are made to stay in cramped conditions and can't move about and just get to sit there and lay eggs all day.

Milk and eggs are animal products and vegetarians don't eat animal products. The thing with milk is that in the animal world milk is only drank by youngsters and each creature drinks only the milk produced by females of its own species. Cow milk has a composition best suited for calfs, not humans. Calcium is great but it can be obtained from other products. It is believed that some diseases appear more likely to those that drink milk than to those that don't. With eggs is more or less the same. It is un-natural and un-healthy.

WOW Annathespian! That is basically the most intelligent and best answer possible!

As a vegan myself I think Anna answered very well and unbiased to both those who do and do not eat eggs and drink milk.

I have worked on farms (in my pre-vegan days) that have treated the cattle very poorly so the harm is out there. But as Anna said for the most part the farmers want a good product to make maximum profit, so therefore they treat their 'cash cows' with the utter-most respect...

See, even vegans can have a sense of humour... well sort of!

Although dairy cows and egg-laying chickens are not killed as a matter of course, many vegans disagree with the way they are treated in the production environment of factory farms. Many believe that cows have simply been turned into "milk machines" to serve human purposes, and that is perceived as a form of cruelty.

The same applies to chickens and their eggs. The conditions in which many chickens have to live in order to produce eggs at these factory farms can also be perceived as cruel.

A vegan cruelty-free lifestyle includes avoidance of all forms of suffering, even if it doesn't technically result in death.

I am pretty sure that vegetarians do drink milk and eat eggs, but vegans do not eat meat or anything that has come from an animal because some of them do not feel it is right to eat anything from an animal. Some of them will not even cook their food for some reason.

Some do some don't. Mostly (naturists) because they feed cows a lot of garbage like antibiotics, hormones and stuff and you get a lot of that in the milk. But there's good news, it's mostly in the FAT, so if you drink SKIM, no problem.

As for vegs who are into non-violence, they ALL DO drink milk. Look at the billion Indians. They drink milk all the time. And they make these really delicious "sweets" from milk, cheese and spices, even rose petals! Amazing. They're great.

Because it comes from an animal Vegans feel that you are depriving a baby cow of its food as for the eggs, eggs usually turn into baby chickens, again that's depriving a back chicken of life.

There are sorts of Vegetarians. Like there those who examine each element, mutually with cans and labels and stuff.(very difficult i say) And there are those that purely flow with the easy concepts mutually with do not eat meat. Cheese and Milk relies upon, they don't have "meat" yet they arrive from cows or eggs. If i became a veg i'd purely be the easy concepts, do not eat meat. yet its your selection. also being a veg is difficult because you aren't getting your proteins! Meat provides a lot of proteins which your body desires. Being a veg isn't well being!
