Charcot neuropathy is a progressive deterioration of weight-bearing joints, usually in the foot or ankle. Historically, neuropathy of the knee was most frequently caused by syphilis, and neuropathy of the shoulder was usually caused by syringomyelia. Today, the Charcot foot occurs most often in patients with diabetic neuropathy; other predisposing conditions include alcoholic neuropathy, sensory loss caused by cerebral palsy or leprosy, and congenital insensitivity to pain. In 1868, Charcot identified neuropathic joints with an unusual pattern of bone destruction in patients with tabes dorsalis. The first description of neuroarthropathy occurring with diabetes mellitus was published in 1936.

I have Charcot Arthropathy. It started with an ulcer on my great toe in 2002. From there I fractured the Metatarsal head on the same foot. Then I fell and broke my ankle on both sides. After that healed, Charcot set in my ankle. That was 2005, so now I am left with this HUGE ankle that swells up and snaps and pops. I have to wear special made shoes and brace, to keep my foot from collapsing.

Charcot foot (sometimes termed as Charcot joint) is found not only in diabetes but other neuropathies that may cause numbness, loss of pain sensation, proprioception or both as also seen in severe osteoarthritis.
Diabetic neuropathy one the complications expected in chronic diabetic patients, affects evry part of the nervous system but possibly exempting the brain. The symptoms include numbness, paresthesia (burning or prickling sensation that is usually felt in all extremities), severe hyperesthesia (an increase sensitivity to touch or painful stimuli) and pain.
Furthermore, involvement of proproceptive fiibers (that are responsible for sensing body positioning) usually leads to abnormalities of gait with the development of the so called 'Charcot joints' particularly in the feet. Loss of arch with multiple fracture of the tarsal bone is a common finding during x-ray examinations.
