Unlike onions where each plant normally forms a single bulb, shallots form clusters of offsets, rather in the manner of garlic.
Shallots are extensively cultivated and much used in cookery, in addition to being pickled. Their flavor is perhaps more delicate than that of onions, perhaps more intense. Certainly it is distinctive. Finely sliced deep-fried shallots are used as a condiment in Asian cuisine. Shallots tend to be considerably more expensive than onions, especially in the United States where they are almost exclusively imported from France.

Shallots are a type of onion - that's not quite as "harsh" in flavor - if I'm not mistaken - shallots still have the "green" tops attached that, when chopped up, can also be used in receipts.

Shallots are in the onion family. You have probably seen them in the grocery. They are about the size of a bulb of garlic. They tend to be more delicate in flavor than an onion. Good in sauces, especially any sort of sauce with wine.

It's a small bulb like a very small onion; usually pinkish when cut into. Flavour is a cross between onions and garlic, but milder. Substitute a small clove of garlic and a few tablespoons of minced onion.
Shallots are expensive and don't store well.
