ANA is done for an autoimmune disorder,i.e. one in which the body develops antibodies and destroys its own tissues such as lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis nodosa, rheumatoid arthritis. It is a kind of screening test and further tests are done to diagnose the specific disorder.

ANA is an accronym for Anti Nuclear Antibodies, wich in plain english is Antibodies (Body defenses) against cell nucleus.

The reasons are multiple but everything that includes a antibody reacction might be tested for example Autoinmune hepatitis

Normal finding (with aging and being female)
