I'll bet it looks pretty scary! The speed is one concern and another is the type of rhythm that it is. Are they treating it with some medication? Is it affecting her blood pressure? Is she hurting or short of breath? If she's in the intensive care unit then I'd be willing to bet they are watching it pretty closely. They have her on the heart monitor and are probably giving her medications that will slow down and correct the problem. The challenge is that the fixing process isn't magic and may not happen instantly. If she feels okay and isn't having any other problems she is probably tolerating it okay and can wait until the medicines work. If things change for her then the nursing staff will get in touch with the doctors and they will change the plans.

Why is she there? Surgery? Breathing trouble? Blood pressure? Diabetes? There are a number of things that could contribute to the problem and I'll bet they are looking at all of them. When you get the chance, jump back on here and tell me more about it. This is what I do and have done for a very long time. I'd be glad to help you through understanding this if you'd like. I hope this helps. Jeff the nurse in Nashville.

You can call your Mom's doctors office or ask your doctor. You may have misunderstood. I couldn't find S.I.C.U. on web md. The ICU may mean Intensive Care Unit and the S could have another meaning. I've heard of the P.I.C.U. and the P is Pedatric, as in the children's ICU. Maybe it means "YOUR MOM'S PULSE IS 166 and she's IN S. ICU"
