Blow Fish is a Japanese delicacy, but it is also the world's most poisonous fish. One itty bitty mistake in preparation, and you're a goner. How many people succumb to this form of poisoning each year?

many times and I am still alive.(*^o^*) I happen to love it. I have never worried about eating fugu because we always make sure the chef preparing it has been certified (licensed) to prepare and serve fugu.
There is some question as to exactly how many people die of fugu poisoning every year. Take a look:
～"Some sources claim that about 100 people die each year from fugu poisoning, while others sources say only 10 to 20 per year, and still others state only 1 person dies each year from fugu. This reported variation may be the result of different sequences of years being studied, as for example in 1958, the first year the preparation of fugu required a special license in Japan, 176 people died of fugu poisoning. According to the Fugu Research Institute, 50% of the victims were poisoned by eating the liver, 43% from eating the ovaries and 7% from eating the skin."

I think the deaths from eating fugu occur when people catch fugu and try to prepare and eat it themselves without being skilled or certified in the correct way to prepare it.

I haven't eaten it and don't plan to. The liver of the Puffer fish or Blow fish (called Fugu in Japan) contains a deadly toxin which produces paralysis which leaves you fully conscious, but completely incapable of movement or expression, before you die. I have seen documentaries of Haitian Voo Doo priests who use this toxin to paralyze people who are then buried for a short time, then dug up. I f they use too much of the poison, the victims are brain damaged and become what are referred to as zombies. There are less exciting but safer options. This is stuff I have read or viewed. I do not care to test this.

This is a widely distributed family with many Pacific species having been implicated in human deaths. Puffer, or Tetrodon, poisoning is the most virulent form of fish poisoning known. According to Dr. Bruce Halstead, who has assembled information on poisonous fishes from all over the world, the overall mortality for Tetrodon poisonings is about 60%. Puffers occur throughout warm and temperate seas. They are highly prized as food in Japan, and they even appear in the United States markets at times. However, in Japan during the 10-year period ending in 1937, over 900 deaths were recorded from Tetrodon poisoning. From 1949 to 1951 nearly 400 cases were recorded with a mortality of 51%. Tetrodon toxin from Pacific species has been studied extensively. It has recently been characterized chemically. Less information is available on the poisonous qualities of Atlantic puffers, but Dr. Edward Larson of the University of Miami has studied the toxicity of the common Atlantic puffer, Sphoeroides maculatus. Although Dr. Larson reports that the- toxicity of puffers from the Miami area was not as great as from other east coast locations studied, local puffers were sufficiently toxic to cause two recent deaths in Miami. According to Dr. Larson, the most toxic portion of the Florida fish is the skin, followed by the liver and gonads.
