Have found detergent doesn't always get rid of the odours from vegetables though.

I know what you mean. I soaked mine in diluted white vinegar and then washed it as normal, let it air dry and that got rid of the odours.

Lemon Juice gets rid of odors on most things. You could try that. I only have a stainless steel steamer so I'm only guessing, but lemon juice works for plastic and thats way more smelly than wood.

Detergent and a nylon bristled brush. You can pick them up at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

soak in hot lemon water with a little detergent , then brush off left over dirt with soft brushes. rinse. air dry.

Do not use soap on it! If it is very dirty, soak it in a mild bleach solution and then use a stiff brush. However most Chinese do not clean them as the steam sterilizes them. If you use the bleach method, then soak it overnight in clean water and air-dry thoroughly before use.

i just soak it in water for 8 hrs. make sure it is hot boiling water though. and if you h8 those odors then add bi-carb soduim {baking soda} in the water. it is safe for food too.
