I've been a vegetarian for 18 yrs and I'm not vegan but I don't do cheese or eggs. So I pretty much got protein from beans, tofu and seitan (and nuts but those are out for you). But about 2 yrs ago I started getting sick and super sleepy too.

I went to a holistic guy and he had me take a rice protein powder. Ever since then I've been feeling better. The brand I use is called nutribiotic and I mix it with water or rice milk. I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty chalky but I chug it.

Basically the problem was that I wasn't getting protein from enough sources. Although I listed a lot above I was probably getting 85% from soy. While soy is good, too much can cause probs for men.

So stepping up the rice protein and adding a lot more seitan (you can find recipes on vegweb and others if you search it) instead of soy I've been feeling better. Good luck.

You can get protein powders but if you're allergic to both nuts and peas, make sure to read the ingredients! Last year I started eating eggs again b/c I was in the same boat, but also b/c I wanted a more "normal" lifestyle and by adding the eggs to my diet I was opening so many doors that had been closed for YEARS. Believe me, I totally understand the reasons for not eating them, but if I lived in a city or region where there was at least one vegetarian/vegan restaurant or more grocery resources I probably wouldn't have started eating them again. I am very isolated in my vegetarianism LOL

You should probably see a doctor if you keep getting sick, and are you talking about colds/flus or other problems? It could be a vitamin you're missing like B12 etc. Try taking a multivitamin everyday and a B12 supplement to see if that helps. It could also be something that's not diet-related at all. I would also suggest posting a more detailed question about your illness (also in the health section) b/c some of us may have experienced the same thing. Not that it's normal for us to get sick, but I think just like everyone else we sometimes get a bit slack with eating healthy or making sure we get all our vitamins.

You can get sick more due to eating junk like sugar and highly processed foods (soda included). Eating junk throws off your acid/alkaline balance leaving you vulnerable to illness. Also, stress and sleep issues can leave you weak.
If you feel a need for more protein, make a shake in the morning of soy milk/banana/soy protein powder. Add ice and another choice of fruit for flavor if you like. If you hate soy, do a diary shake with whey or egg protein powder. Rice milk, rice protein also available. Take care, and eat your veggies!

How strict a vegetarian are you? Do you eat eggs or cheese - both sources of protein? Do you combine foods with complementary amino acids, like beans and corn? Read "Diet for a Small Planet" for more ideas.

Maybe protein is not your problem. We are surrounded by bacteria and viruses - they're everywhere - but we get sick only when our immune system is suppressed by fatigue, stress or malnutrition. Get enough rest, reduce stress, and try 1000 mg. of Vitamin C daily. This is one of the strongest supports to the immune system.

Tofu and all soy products are very high in protein. You can also try a protein powder, but make sure it's a vegan one. The things they put in the others is really gross.

Well, just eat a ton of tofu and soy products. Plus, if you aren't vegan, than eggs are a good source of protein.

beans! Legumes have a lot of protein in them - also make sure to eat your leafy greans! (Can you eat anthing with soybeans? There is so much out there to eat like tofu, and many veggie meats - full of protein)

If protein is not the problem then why do you think you need more? You need to go get some blood work done.

soy protein is the best source. bolthouse farms has a really tasty drink called perfectly protein, with 25 grams of soy protein, and you can find it at any major grocery store.
