A colposcopy is a procedure that is used to look at the cervix. The doctor uses a microscope to look at any abnormal cells you may have on your cervix. If you do have abnormal looking cells the doctor will remove a small sample of it and send it to the lab. The results can either come back as nothing, pre-cancerous, or cancerous.

Usually if you have to have a colposcopy that means that you have a strain of HPV that can potentially lead to developing cervical cancer or genital warts. These strains usually do NOT clear up on their own and the women will have HPV the rest of her life. The strains that usually clear up are the ones that do not cause any health problems. There are over 100 different kinds of HPV and a hand full of them can cause cancer and warts. The rest don't do anything and usually clear up on their own.
