depends when it is detected. cancer is rated by stages 1 to 4, 4 being the most advanced and deadly. as cancer develops it spreads (metasticizes) to other areas. if diagnosed before it spreads, you may be able to surgically remove the tumor and treat with chemotherapy and radiation therpay. if the cancer has spread to other organs, the prognosis is extremely poor. unfortunately, most lung cancer isnt detected until it is too late to treat. bottom line: very low survival rate.

If you smoke, stop smoking. Try to avoid second-hand smoke.
Some patients with limited stage disease may need radiation to the entire brain after they have completed chemotherapy and radiation to the chest. This is known as prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI). The overall survival depends on the stage of the disease. For limited stage small cell cancer, cure rates may be as high as 25%, while cure rates for extensive stage disease are less than 5%.
