Walking is one favorite way that people with lung disease exercise. It's a good exercise to start with because it's easy. You can walk inside or outside, and you don't need any special equipment. Walking is an enjoyable way to build up and strengthen your body.
Deep breathing is a good relaxation skill for new nonsmokers. When you smoked, if you inhaled deeply, you were breathing in a way which actually promoted relaxation. People who stop smoking often forget to continue such deep breathing and therefore experience increased tension. This exercise will show you how to breathe without cigarettes in a way that slows down the pace of your body and promotes general relaxation.

Deep breathing. Start slowly and work up to bein able to breath so that can't fill your lungs any more. Hold it and then breath in again. When you let it out - do it slowly and after you think you have let it all out breath out some more. And breath out some more until you are almost coughing. It will get to the bottom of your lungs and allow you to take more and more deep breaths.

You don't say how long ago you quit, I suspect rather recently. Give it two weeks then walking is always good. If you get short of breath, just stop and stand for a while, until it gets better. Your pulmonologist, and I hope you have one, can better guide you, depending on the amount of damage already sustained.

Dear Gizmo,
I would check with your doctor, but treatments like HFCWO (high frequency chest wall oscillation) are extremely effective. Check it out on the web!
I hope this helps,
Lonnie
