Umm. I never liked the taste. I would recommend a great soft drink, or perhaps a designer fruit juice. They are so much better tasting. I guess some un-fortunate souls have a hard time with liqueur. My neighbor just passed from liver failure because of alcohol..Try to stay far away..

just finished up my stint of drinking 5-6 times a week, starting at 8:00pm and drinking to 2:00am doing computer stuff. I've been doing this basically for years. Diet Coke and Rum were my choice, or maybe whiskey. Maybe a Saturday was 10 "Ice" beers.
But after I 'stopped' drinking for a week, I thought I'd celebrate, so I drank one of my usual evenings. With some other medications I had started taking, - I had a horrible hang-over for a day and a half.
I made another "mistake" 2 weeks after that, - and the same story. It's been 4 months and I really don't drink. Maybe a couple of beers... but that's about it. Just the thought of a hang-over and going back into the ditch is enough to avoid it. Besides, I drank alone, so it's not like I was going to the bar, or have a lot of friends doing it.
My health, head are better and now I don't avoid interacting with people. Folks say I've changed, -but I don't tell them how or why they'd think that. With spring and summer her, I'm walking about 4 times a week. Maybe 6 miles each.
Do what you have to, - either AA or no-AA, but realize that your life would and could be better, without wasting the time with the bottle.
You can figure out a way to contact me if you want.

I'm not even sure this will be a useful answer to you, but you never know...it could become a good excuse if a lot of your friends drink. I take some psych meds that say "don't drink alcohol while taking this medication" on the bottle. So I just don't drink. When people look at me funny when I order coffee at the bar, I just tell them I can't drink because I'm on medication. They generally accept that answer without much question...and in my case it happens to be true.

When I became a vegitarian I decided I wanted a clean system, plus alcohol has a lot of calories so its a plus if I dont drink.

Damn, how did you even know I DID drink alcohol? You must be some sort of psychic. Tell me, what do you see in my future?
Oh to answer your question. I still occasionally drink alcohol, so I haven't really quit . . . yet, but I'm working on it.

I though about being a kid and how disappointed I was that my parents drank. I am now setting a good example. If you don't have kids to impress, try the book "How to quit drinking without AA" by Jerry Dorsman. It breaks down the ways you are wasting time, money, and your life.

I just stopped one day. It helped that my husband also stopped drinking. Then when we are out we can say "we don't drink" and I don't look different. We are really healthy people so we always just order water. It is cheaper and the food always tastes so much better, esp desert!

I'm struggling with the same thing right now. I think you need really supportive friends and family, who are not drinking. You have to find other things to do with your time....obviously things that you enjoy. Get creative and think about the things you haven't done in a long time that you used to enjoy, or even things you have never done but always wanted to do.

Try eating something instead of reaching for that drink - I can almost guarantee you won't want it as much - or just eat something when you have 2 drinks.....I don't know why, but it works!

You put down the glass, you don't buy it and you don't go to places where people are drinking or selling it.
