If you are meaning no meats at all including dairy, then the best proteins come from:

Tofu, firm- 1/2 cup - 15.7 g protein
Broccoli - 1 cup - 4.6 g of protein
Chick-peas, boiled - 1 cup - 14.5 g
Black beans, boiled - 1 cup - 15.2 g
Lentils, boiled - 1 cup - 17.9 g
Peanut Butter - 2 Tbsp. - 8.0 g
Quinoa, cooked - 1 cup - 11.0 g
Bulgar, cooked - 1 cup - 5.6
Whole wheat bread - 1 slice - 2.7 g.
Tempeh - 1/2 cup - 15.7 g

Peanutbutter, peas, whole wheat, soy.... you can buy dehydrated "textured vegetable protein" or TVP which comes in a similar form as ground beef or chicken nuggets. I get mine at a store we have here called the Bulk Barn (but any bulk/health food place should have it). The ground up kind is a great addition to pastas, soups etc. and the nugget/strip form is good fried or marinated. I like to coat mine in batter like nuggets. I also do this with little cubes of tofu and eat them with sweet and sour sauce. Yum!

You can also get protein powders to add to certain foods or drinks. Be careful though, some of them are disgusting and don't mix well.

PS ~ one guy mentioned gelatin.... 100% NOT vegetarian!

When considering the source of protein, you must take into account whether the protein is of high quality or "complete". A complete protein has all the essential amino acids (the one's the body cannot make itself). For example, gelatin is almost all protein, but it is of low quality, and gelatin is not considered a good source of protein. The best (most complete) source of protein is eggs. If you are not vegan, then eggs, milk, cheese can provide all the protein you need. You do not have to worry about fat or cholesterol if you use low-fat dairy products. While eggs do contain high levels of cholesterol, it is now believed that dietary cholesterol does not significantly contribute to serum cholesterol; the real culprits are saturated and trans fats. Soybeans are a good source, followed by beans, rice and nuts. But they are not as complete as eggs, which are the accepted standard for a complete protein.

There are powders that you can add to milk or water that are packed (27 grams!) with protein! I get it at Costco. Also...if you want to do the research, combining complex carbohydrates with fiber (I think) forms proteins for vegetarians.

Eggs and cheese.

Peanut butter with whole wheat bread.

Various beans and soy products.

You have to be careful when not eating meat (if you have been eating meat). Meat has the proteins, B vitamins and iron needed for proper health and assimilation.

Soybeans ARE the perfect food---protein, fiber, no bad fats, and TOFU is made from soybeans!!
