I have sleep apnea. It was horrible, not being able to sleep, feeling like I was choking and NOT KNOWING WHY.
I have had a bi-pap sleep machine for a while. (There is also c-pap, but they're similar enough). It makes a gentle whoosh sound - like a vacuum cleaner but much softer. It does not keep me up. Also, there is the sleep mask, which takes a little getting used to but not much.
Any minor inconvenience of the system is 100 times better than not being able to sleep! I have never slept better in my life!
Best of luck. Give it a chance and work with your doctor to adjust it if necessary. You will be glad you did.
Out of all the questions I answered today this was the most important!

Obstructive sleep apnoea
This is a respiratory condition where the relaxed throat muscles block the airway briefly hundreds of times each night, which stops the breathing and deprives the body of oxygen.
Apnoea can lead to chronic tiredness.
In turn, this causes tiredness during the day, which can make the person irritable and prone to accidents when driving for example.
If obstructive sleep apnoea goes unchecked and untreated then it can eventually increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke.
The person with sleep apnoea may not realise that they have a problem and their only symptom may be daytime tiredness.
However, their partner may report that they snore and frequently stop breathing in their sleep.
Like snoring, the condition may be caused or made worse by excessive alcohol intake and being overweight.
Eliminating these factors may be enough to alleviate the problem.
An effective treatment is something called nasal continuous positive airway pressure.
With this therapy a mask worn over the nose delivers slightly pressurised air to help keep the airways open during sleep.
Please see the webpages for more details on Sleep apnea.

Cpacks DO help. It is part of the solution.
Weight loss and Respiratory medicines along with it help more.
I was on that road and had sinus surgery to fix my problem. Yet my weight and allergies are the issue now.
Good luck.
Girl, trust me after you get used to the noise, you will sleep so deep and restful that health is just a few good nights of sleep away.. You will be amazed.

I have an uncle with sleep apnea. He had a machine several years ago and it was sooo loud... I couldn't sleep when he did! Luckily though, a few days ago I was talking to a friend of mine whose brother has sleep apnea. She told me that the machines they have now make little or no noise. Sorry to hear that you have sleep apnea, but it's good that you are having to get the machine now instead of a decade ago :) You and any others in your house should be able to sleep a lot better now.

Snoring makes more noise than the machine. My husband has the machine and I sleep much better now. The machine just has a nice hummmmmm to it. My husband is a happier person now that he gets more sleep...and so do I. It does give off a cool breeze which isn't all bad either. Good luck.

I'm a nurse and know several patients and spouses of co-workers who have them. It is a low white noise kind of sound and they say it's the best sleep they have ever had. No real complaints known from sleeping partners. Get it now--you'll be glad. The risks of not getting it are too high! Good luck.

I have it and wear a CPAP at night. I really do not notice the noise, but that mask sure is a real pain!
