There are over 100 different kinds of HPV. Most do not do anything and usually go away on their own. Some kinds can cause cancer including cervical cancer, penile cancer, anal cancer, head and neck cancer. Several kinds can also cause warts including genital warts, hand and feet warts. These kinds usually do NOT go away.
If a person develops warts they can be treated with prescription medication or can be removed at the doctors office.
Cervical cancer is the main concern with HPV. I've read 4,000 women die every year from it. Cervical cancer can be treated if caught early enough. I got cervical cancer from my HPV right after I turned 17. It was one of the most painful and emotional times of my life!
If you think you may have HPV go to your doctor and get tested. If you are sexually active get a pap smear done AT LEAST once a year. Pap smears are the best thing a woman can do to detect early signs of cervical cancer.
***Also, I think bubbleytoesforu is a little confused. There is no such thing as a viral bacteria. It is either a virus OR a bacteria. HPV is a virus. Bacterial STDs such as chlamydia, gonnorrhea, syphills, and trichomoniasis can be cured with antibiotics. Viral STDs like herpes, (some) HPV, HIV, and hepatitis are NOT curable and only the symptoms can be treated.

treatable, yes. Curable, no. There's recently a vaccine that was approved in women only, which prevents certain strains of HPV associated with cervical cancer. To my knowledge, it's a prophylactic vaccine only, in that it does not cure existing disease, but can create immunity for those not yet infected (could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure that's the case).
HPV is a virus, a very common one at that. It causes warts, the warts on your fingers, toes, and genitals. Different strains of the same species of virus cause different infections. The one to which I'm sure you're referring is the specific strain that causes genital warts. Upwards of 40-45% of the population are colonized with this virus, and 10-20% have active disease (warts).
Treatment usually involves wart removal, chemically burned or frozen off usually, but in VERY severe cases (usually not done) they'll give anti-viral therapy.
HPV is a necessary precursor for cervical cancer. 99% of cervical cancers are associated with the cervical dysplasia caused by the HPV virus, which I think I should add can infect and cause lesions everywhere from the outer mucosa of the labia all the way into the cervix. It is a viral infection with no cure, in that you will always have it, and there's a chance after warts are removed that they'll grow back. Regular pap smears are essential to women infected with HPV

There are several forms of HPV. One of them can cause warts, others are very mild and they don't cause any symptoms at all. Unfortunately, HPV has no cure but it can be treated. I was just at my OBGYN and she explained everything. In the Dr's office that I go to, they assume that every single sexually active female has it...that's how common it is. Don't be mad at your boyfriend if you test positive for HPV. Men carry it without ever knowing and it has no effect on them whatsoever...there isn't even a test for men because it isn't necessary. Your main concern with HPV should be that if it is undetected it can lead to cervical cancer in some instances. It is very important that you have a yearly pap smear. If detected early, cervical cancer can be removed...that is why you need to have your yearly pap smears done.

HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease caused by human papillomavirus. HPV is the name of a group of viruses that include more than 100 different strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted, and they can infect the genital area of men and women including the skin of the penis, vulva, or anus and the lining of the vagina, cervix or rectum. You can have the virus and not know because signs and symptoms are not always present. However when they are they are quite pronounced. Genital warts usually appear as soft, moist pink or flesh colored swellings (in the genital area). They can be raised or flat, single or multiple, small or large and sometimes cauliflower shaped. In all this is one nasty STD you don't want to catch. Being that it is a "virus", once you have it, you have it forever, there is no cure. To get rid of the warts, you have to have them surgically removed, and it is possible that this std can lead to cervical or rectal cancer.

HPV is a virual bacteria that can not be treated. It is usually transmitted through sexual contact. It can go away on its own, however if you are a female you need a pap smear to be diagnosed with it as well as a biopsy. A biospy will be done as often as needed by your GYN. When you have 3 negative results in a row then you no longer have to be as concerned.

They are genital warts. No it cannot be cured. It is a big cause of cervical cancer. Someone close to me found out 5 months ago that she has it and just a couple weeks ago she had precancerous cells on her cervix, already.
