If you have been told to fast, you cannot eat or drink anything. Even water. I was told by my doctor that I could wet my mouth with water but should spit it out, no more than the amount that you would normally intake while brushing your teeth.

It's best to be fasting when taking any kind of blood test dealing with your lipids, HDL, LDL's, and glucose, You shouldn't have anything to eat or drink after 12 midnight the night before you are scheduled to go. By drinking coffee or eating anything it can give an inaccurate range as much as 40-50 points off.

I often recommend that a patient go early in the morning even ten minutes before the facility or Doctor's office opens so that way you don't have to starve before you have the test(s) performed .

I'm a coffee drinker myself and I know how crazy I can get without it , I sympathize with you.

My opinion is no.

My husband is a coffee drinker too. He has to have bloodwork done every three months for his lipids, and he is told NO food OR drink of ANY kind after midnight the night before the bloodwork... including coffee.

They always schedule his appointment at 8:30 a.m., so, 8-1/2 hours from fast to bloodwork.

Definitely take the advice of the one responder who said to have the bloodwork done early, and hit a Starbucks as soon as you're done. It's better to be 'safe' than have to repeat the test because it's inaccurate. It's not worth the risk.

If you want a really accurate test, then no. If this is your first test, and you suspect you are at no risk for elevated cholesterol/triglycerides, you might want to risk it. It will raise the levels slightly, but if your levels are low enough, might not take it into danger range.

If you elect to have coffee and the results are abnormal, you will have to have it repeated without the coffee. Why not just do it right to begin with? Plus then it does not waste your money or the money of the insurance company which is passed on to all of us.

It IS unpleasant if you are caffeine addict, as I am, but the anticipation is worse than the actual event. Get up and go early, then stop by your nearest Starbucks and treat yourself!

Try some vegetable juice that has zero calories for substitute. Coffee seeds or any seeds will have fats of course. If your really gung-ho drink up your black coffee, just a little while before the test before it sinks into the system and absorbed, and later of course you can read the LDL levels- readings accordingly from the reports. Best is to avoid any thing by mouth. Trust me I am used to it- that is not taking anything.

NO! No coffee not even black before the test. Coffee is a stimulant and may alter the test results. You should fast for at least 12 hours. You may have water only. After you have your blood drawn plan to stop by your favorite coffee stand afterwards!

No, you are to be fasting...no food or drink for atleast 12 hrs. I believe. I've always been told nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before. Water should be fine though. Go early and get the blood work done and then stop at Starbucks on the way home...=)

I don't think so. Here, it's a strict 12 hour fast before a lipids test, though water is allowed.
I would just stick to water, to be on the safe side.
