I've never tasted anything so bland and dull in my life. They're always a misguided buy for any party because everybody leaves them alone but in all the American TV shows it's always 'Yeh, let's get some pretzels in!' - or are you being ironic?

Maybe you've just been eatin' the wrong pretzels. Generally quite tasty, pretzels can come in hard and soft variety, and in an abundance of shapes and sizes.

Soft can come salted or unsalted and are normally consumed at baseball games or purchased from unsavoury looking street vendors. A generous lashing of American mustard usually completes this snack, served warm.

Hard pretzels are bought in large plastic crisp bags and can come large or small, and in stick or twisted varieties. These are nearly always quite heavily salted and, yes, can be bland. However, I can recall the high point of my Friday evenings as a child when my mother would let us buy a bag of stuffed pretzel bites, with either peanut butter, cheese or mustard filling inside. Bliss.

I would experiment with pretzels further. If you live in the UK, as I do, you don't really get the full range of pretzel products to choose and sample from. Some are quite tasty (I'm a believer in honey mustard pretzel bites), and others are frankly repulsive. Try some other flavours and kinds - you may like some.

Vive la difference de pretzel!

Well... First, if you haven't tried a soft pretzel, then you might never understand. Second, it might be that we've been lulled by the hospitality industry in that pretzels are commonly found as a complimentary snack at bars & taverns, and, because they are generally quite salty, tend to boost liquor sales. Third, partly in response to another answer posted here, I would like to point out that pretzels are not an American creation, but a product of the Fatherland (Germany), where many people eat them as well.

I hope this helps a bit.

P.S. As for mustard, I prefer Spicy Brown, but here's one to try with a soft pretzel: First glase it with garlic butter, then sprinkle parmesan cheese over it.

hard crunchy pretzels weren't invented by consumers. They were invented by some money hungry beer companies that wanted to invent a product that would soak up just enough of the booze in the buyers belly with out making them feel full while delivering salt (salt on the pretzels) so that the person would get more thirsty and drink more beer.

Our water actually tastes half way decent so we need a reson drink ourselves stupid.

You've obviously never had a warm, salty Philadelphia *soft* pretzel with mustard...yum.

As for the hard, dry stuff you buy in bags...at least they're healthier than potato chips (crisps!) because they're not deep fried in fat....

p.s. what television shows are you talking about where the characters are crazy about pretzels?!

I love pretzels! They're gorgeous and i'm as British as they come. Well done u Americans for inventing such a tasty snack!
It could be that haven't tried a very nice brand or flavour. There are some really great ones out there, but salted and crack black pepper are the best. Yum yum!

There's the hard crispy ones in a bag and the soft warm ones at the mall. The hard ones are an excellent substitute for potato chips, since they're fat-free. The soft ones are awesome fresh outta the oven, put mustard or cream cheese on it, yum

Why do you hate America? If we get rid of the pretzals, the terrorists win. Soft Philly pretzels are the best by the way.
