You can ice it with a bag and a star tip ( I use wiltons) That way the icing is going direct onto the cake with no spreading.
You can use marzipan, roll it out thin and drape that over the cake creating a smooth even crumb free canvas.
You can use thinned icing and pour that over the cake and let it dry ( seals the crumbs in) than vary carefully you can spread thin layers graduating to a thicker layer of icing.
Use a soft touch and a steady hand. DOnt pres hard and try not to move the spatula / knife around much as to "dig" into the cake and bring the crumbs into the surface.

I was a professional cake decorator and was pretty damn good. If you are using a spatula or a bag (bag is a whole lot easier) the trick is putting a lot of icing on it. Then after the cake is COMPLETELY iced, you can shape it and smooth it out. That way you won't see the crumbs. And the stiffer the icing, the better!!! Happy decorating = )

Use a petit four icing. Lay the cut shape on a cake rack on top of a cookie sheet. Pour the icing over the boot. After that dries, you can either pour another layer to make it thicker or use regular frosting over top of the petit four icing. The petit four icing will just seal it and give you a smoother surface to work with.
Good luck and happy birthday to your son!

Cut the cake with a serrated blade and freeze it before icing it. Works every time.

use flat spatula knife, put icing glob on one spot, dip spatula in water, spread icing, repeat until cake is iced then you can even sprinkle water on icing to help erase lines etc. good luck. try this on another cake first...you will see how easy and helpful

Harley is right, but I would use an icing bag to lay it down. If you dont have one, you can "Hillbilly" one by cutting the corner out of a ziplock bag.
