Did you expect your mom to cook you a different meal from the rest of your family? Did you demand that everyone eat Tofurkey for Thanksgiving because you could not stand the thought of a turkey being tortured?

You do not need to change your mom's mind. Your mother is an adult. I am sure that she realizes that a cow dies for her steak, and she is probably at peace with that. You need to grow a spine and take responsibility for your beliefs. That includes preparing your own food and cleaning up after yourself. If you are 16 or over, perhaps you should get a job so you can buy some of your own vegetarian items as they can be expensive. You could cook a vegetarian meal for your entire family once a week and give your mom a break.

Your mother works hard. If she is like most moms, then she works full time, takes care of the house, does your laundry, changes your bed and does most of the cooking. It's not that she does not get vegetarianism, she's tired!

Tell her 2 things:
1. That you request that she open mindedly consult The International Vegetarian Society at 22 West Madison Street, Suite 900, Chicago, Illinois 60602,
and 2.: That you insist on reading all the same material and to have it saved for you until you are old enough to understand it all.
You are right, kiddo. Pray about the matter and ask for guidance for her and you.

I'm 17 and have been a vegetarian all my life. I don't eat meat because like you, I love animals of all kinds. I just wish my family would get it. It's sick to me to look at, say, a chicken, which I find adorable, and then go KFC and start chomping down on hacked up and batter covered pieces of a dead one. That's an animal God created to live, and sure, be part of the food chain, but not to be fried in batter, then to have people charge consumers a small fortune to eat it and get fat. I think similarly about all animals people eat, which are all cute and beautiful to me. We don't NEED meat. When was the last time you herd that someone died from being vegetarian? Of course never, sounds silly. Sure meat is an excellent source of protein, but not the only source of it. Hello, broccoli! And some meat can be diseased, like mad cow, and possibly kill you. I just wish more people would understand what I've been talking about for so long. I think your mothers reason for wanting to not become vegetarian is strange, but you should just be glad one more person is converting. Tell her about all the benefits, which there is a lot

How I got into this is that I read Mad Cowboy and Slaughterhouse. Those two books really woke me up. I highly recommend them.

I will eat organic foods - chicken - in a great while fish. I will eat organic eggs.

This has quite a bit of info. concern our food safety today and factory farming issues. Who wants hormones, pesticides and antibiotics in our foods? This is why there are so many health issues today for we humans.

Factory Farming (on a large scale using pesticides) is also very bad for the environment, as critters create lots of waste which then goes into soil and rivers.

We have a responsibility to leave this planet sustainable for our children and grandchildren. :)

If you start by trying organic foods - you will see an immediate quality increase and taste in your food - my husband will normally shop organic now and he used to care less - til he tasted it!

Read my other thread on what to eat (click on my name) and you can see my smoothie recipe which is great for breakfast or a treat and some other links on sites/foods that taste really good.

As you learn you can share with your family.

Explain the benifits of you being a vegitarian and how it makes you feel about yourself, do some research and show her the positive side of vegitarianism, have a good head on your shoulders about it and remember you can always say no I would not like any of that I am dieting or just that it isn't exactly what you had in mind.

I think it's ok to be a vegetarian as long as you agree to eat meat alternatives and find other ways to get your protein. (that's why your mom wants you to eat meat) If you don't eat you protein you'll lose muscle mass.

My husband's family are vegetarian for religious reasons (Seventh Day Advetist). I wouldn't look to them for food advice though. You could look up certain vegetarian food companies. There are several.

OMG. There is nothing worse than someone trying to feed you crap about how you should live your life...

Uh Huh.

Your mom is annoyed with you.
You are annoyed with her.

You complaining to her and trying to convert her is not going to help. It's just irritating.
And whatever you do don't show her those gross pictures of mutilated animals...those are just sick.
