She's had prior lung problems. She also has other health problems. As bad as this sounds : her husband would not call the medics. Someone told me via phone and I had to call them because he refused to. Needless to say, he's very angry with me, so I'm not going to go down there and have him start yelling and make it worse for her. I'm just so worried about her. All she does is clean and run the kids to places (in the car) and wait on everyone over there. There's one adult son living there (in his 40's) who could help out a LOT more. Also her daughter, in her 40's, an ex-nurse, and some teenage grandkids, who could all do more work over there since they all live there. All I know is she was vomiting severly, then dry heaving, and sweating. My stepdaughter called from the hospital to tell me about the low oxygen. They apparently did an MRI of her heart too. I already lost both of my parents, so this is really bothering me. Can anyone tell me what this low oxygen means? Thank you so much.

It is hard at this point to tell you if her symptoms are due to a heart or lung problem. A heart problem can cause a low blood oxygen as well as lung problems. Women tend to get different symptoms than men when having a heart attack. She could possibly have an infection that is causing the problem. I am so thankful that you get her to the hospital so that they can take care of her. It sounds like her husband just can't handle this sort of thing at all - and has a serious denial problem when it comes to his wife's health. I hope that when she returns home they treat her like a Queen Bee. Sounds like she deserves it!

Several different things can cause low oxygen. Heart conditions, lung conditions, infections, could be any of a number of things. One possibility is that the body was trying to compensate for metabolic alkalosis which can be caused by severe vomiting. You vomit a lot, you lose stomach acid, and that causes your body pH to rise. pH in the human body is a delicate thing, and the brain really NEEDS for it to stay as constant as possible or death will occur. One way of making it come back down is by retaining carbon dioxide in the lungs. If that was what was going on, it would make sense that her oxygen would be low. At any rate, it is really a good thing that you got her help. Hope she feels better soon!

It could be several things, I would be concerned about her as well. It could be exhaustion and dehydration, or it could be the precursor to a heart problem. The testing will show more. It's good that you called and got her help when you did. Don't let the rest of the family make you feel badly for that. You did the right thing.

Hypoxemia or hypoxia (low O2 saturation in the blood) can be caused by the following:

1. anemic hypoxia - a decrease in hemoglobin thus decreasing the capability o f the blood to deliver O2 to tissues.

2. Circulatory hypoxia - caused by problems like congestive heart failure and most forms of shock syndromes.

3. Hypoxia due to increased oxygen requirements - seen in cases of febrile conditions and problems like thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism).

4. Ischemic hypoxia - maybe seen in congestive heart failure (failure of the heart to pump out enough blood) and hypovolemic shock (severe dehydration, hemmorhage) causing a decrease in blood volume.

5. histotoxic hypoxia (improper oxygen utilization) - as seen in some poisoning ex. cyanide poisoning.

6. lung infections and restrictive and obstructive lung problems (ex. COPD)

Her lungs are not transferring oxygen into her bloodstream very well. She is on the way out. She might get by for a while wearing one of those oxygen masks all the time.

It depends what she likes. Flowers are always appreciated although a bit obvious! A nice bottle of wine or some nice candles? a nice ornament of something she likes (cats or dogs for example) or a nice picture frame or jewellery? Is it her birthday or an occasion? If it is just a little token gift then flowers or wine should be fine? x
