When i was pregnant I got Diabetes. They told me that there are risks - but that the major one was that the baby might gain too much weight and not be able to come out the usual way. You shouldn't be scared - there are ways to help control it. You have to follow a diet and might have to use insulin. People claim that a lot of things cause birth defects - but a lot of times it is really rare - don't go by what they say. Take care of yourself the best way you can - and have the baby. Everything will be alright with the proper care. Good luck!

actually did u have diabetes before preganancy or during?
if during then my response below applies:

it won't cause birth defects, and the baby shouldn't have diabetes at birth...however diabetic women who do not control their sugar do have a higher chance of delivering stillbirths. if not stillborn...the baby will be very fat. u have trouble processing the sugar, while the baby is getting too much sugar...the baby will become too fat (since the baby does not have problems processing the sugar). delivery will be more difficult for u and u will have a higher chance of pre-eclampsia, plus it poses a greater risk for the baby to get stuck...the doctor may have to try special maneuvers to get the baby out...but it could result in broken bones or nerve damage. so for these fat babies, c sections are recommended.
also right after birth, ur baby was so used to making so much insulin to put away all of that high sugar that he/she will be at risk for low blood sugar.
the baby may also be at a higher risk for jaundice, low calcium levels...but these can be easily treated.

if u had diabetes before pregnancy...u really need to control ur sugar and there is a possibility of birth defects in the baby if u don't have it controlled.
