i am half indian, and my indian grandmother makes this all the time. it is wonderful for both sensitive and cultured tastes. it is sooo good, cheap, and really quick and easy. (the spices can be expensive but once you have them, you can make this all the time) we have it at least once a week and bring leftovers for work lunches.
Chana Masala (Indian Chick Peas)
-canned garbanzo beans (chick peas) - 1/4 can per person
-1 tsp cumin
-1 large onion
-1 tsp corriander
-1 tsp tumeric
-1 tsp salt
-2 minced garlic cloves
-1 tsp powdered ginger (i never use fresh, but its fine if you do)
-1 can diced tomatoes
-1 tbsp lemon or lime juice
-dash hot pepper flakes (optional)
-2 tbsp fat (oil, butter, whatever it doesn't matter)
Add fat to pan and sautee onions on medium for 3 minutes. Add all remaining ingredients except for chick peas. Sautee for 10 minutes. Add chick peas, cover, and simmer about 15 minutes.
Serve with rice (you can add some tumeric to make it yellow), and raita (plain yogurt with grated cucumbers mixed in). This is so good I get hungry just thinking about it!!!
