I was only diagnosed Type 2 last month. I know to have small meals throughout the day as opposed to three large ones. I'm getting used to the kinds of foods I'm supposed to be eating. For example, when I caved and had some pasta, I ended up sleeping for over 15 hours. Thank God it was a weekend.

But my problem is this, even when I have a good snack before bed, I wake up like clockwork, at four in the morning when my blood sugar crashes. Should I eat something, I'll want to sleep past noon. If I don't eat anything I can't get back to sleep. Either way I'm a walking zombie. Help!

i assumed this blood sugar crash happened only with insulin and i am very surprised to hear you are getting it with type two-this is a stupid remark from me as cases vary enormously.someone metioned the dawn phenomenon which is a crash between four and six in the morning-this problem was threatening to tear me apart when i sstarted on tiny amounts of insulin and luckily i skipped out of the problem by stopping chocolate and then being able ot control wihtout the injections-i found that the amount of food had to be tightly controlled to avoid overeating on the one hand and undereating so that you woke up-the hunger thus produced was unnatural
when you mention this to the doctor they stay silent-a quarter of diabetes cases are 'brittle' meaning they are unpredicable but your case is predicable
keep edging the food intake up or down till you balance-i wonder if you realise yet how delicate the balance is of the blood sugar level-you simply have to get rid of all the offenders otherwise you will not eliminate the sugar swings from high to low that i think you are having but be careful not to starve down the glucose
work carefully with the doctor and the dietician
i would like to hear more about this as htere are a quite a few diabetics caught in this dilemma and we need to build up a body of knowledge about it as it is an isolation experience
on a separate but similar point male diabetics subject to benign prostate enlargement in later life are already prone to waking up to go to the toilet so for them tight control is necessary to stop high blood sugar levels from drawing water out ot the tissues and waking them up
i hav e my lasst meal at midnight and then try tto avoid drinking anything else tiny sips of water until bedtime two ror three hours later and i eat a piece of fruti immediately before bedtime to provide a sugar lift just before sleep-this will not be burnt off and will store but nothing can be done about it and the apple moistens yur mouth enough so tha t you don t need to drink and it does not wake you during the night;a tough discipline which will get easier in time
i think the fifteen hour sleep happened cos of the disturbed sleep
dont panic as you can work thru ti

As someone who has had diabetes for 12 years now, I would give you this suggestion.
have a light snack of a few crackers and some cheese ( 4 crackers and one ounce of hard cheese) about 2-3 hours before you go to bed. Your sugar is crashing because you are hypoglycemic and this can cause you a whole host of other problems. By eating the cheese and crackers, you will have a carbohydrate that is a complex sugar
and it will take longer for the body to break it down, the cheese, as a protein will slow the absorption of the sugars and that should help to maintain your sugar levels as you sleep through the night. Also, test the loudness of your alarm clock. You may need a
louder alarm to help you wake up as a result of being either hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic is that you are tired. Hope this helps

I can't say I know much about diabetes, but one suggestion I have for helping you sleep is a tea from Celestial Seasonings called Sleepytime tea. I have a friend who is lucky to sleep for 4 hours & this is what he uses when he just HAS to get some sleep without feeling that hungover feeling in the morning.

I hope this helps at least a little!

Ask your doctor. Low Carb diet might be for you - and you'll be able to sleep better. Also, try Tylenol PM. It's quite safe and non-habit forming.
