A delicacy of Asia and especially the Philippines, China, Cambodia, and Vietnam, a balut (or Hột vịt lộn in Vietnamese) is a fertilized duck egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell.

Balut is a fertilized duck or chicken egg that is allowed to grow until an embryo is formed. At that point, you punch a hole in the bottom and suck the embryo out and swallow it. It originated in the Philippines. At night, in the barrios, you can hear the vendors wandering around shouting "Balut! Balut!". Don't really remember how it tastes as I was pretty drunk. Actually, you have to be drunk to even think of eating it.

Good luck.

Balut is a duck egg with duck not completely formed. The bones are still soft enough to be broken while being chewed. As far as I know it is a delicacy in the Philippines, but other than that I don't know where it originated from. I don't know how it tastes but, my dad tried it once and said never again.

Balut or Duck egg is popularly known in the Philippines and popularly known originated from our hometown "Pateros" i will explain briefly why? our hometown called Pateros because from the word PATO in our native language tagalog means Duck and EROS also Sapatero means shoemaker. So that's how it started because during the 19th Century Spanish Regime or Era the means of livelihood on our place is raising ducks and shoemaker. Honestly in the Philippines when you ask or talk about Balut the second thing that come to their mind is it from Pateros?

it's from the philippines. tastes good with salt and vinegar but i only have the soup inside and the yolk, never the chick. you don't have to eat the chick if you don't want to, unless you're adventurous. :-)
