You mean fish and chips. Dont find that much nowadays its usually just paper. But why not? Its a good way of recycling.

Fish-and-chips shops traditionally wrapped their product in an inner white paper wrapping and an outer insulating and grease-absorbing layer of newspaper or blank newsprint, though nowadays the use of newspaper has largely ceased on grounds of hygiene, and establishments often use food-quality wrapping paper instead - occasionally printed on the outside to emulate newspaper. The hot food and the steam it produces cause the paper wrapping to emit a characteristic smell, and the close wrapping prevents evaporation, giving the food a moist texture which can last for some time if the parcel remains unopened. Polystyrene packing, usual in many other kinds of take-away outlet, sometimes appears. Even when the fish get wrapped in paper, an open polystyrene container often holds the chips. Purists maintain that it "doesn't taste the same" in polystyrene or cardboard, lacking the smell and moist, steamed texture. Britain banned the use of real newspaper in the late 1980s. Australian fish-and-chip shops, faced with a ban on the use of actual newspaper in the 1970s, substituted butcher's paper as the external wrapping, though a few shops continue to wrap their product in newspaper, especially in rural areas.

I think you will find using newspaper has been stopped in the UK.although some chip shops use imitation newspaper.

What else do you put them in to insulate them? Its traditional English stuff! Even with the poly boxes, they still have to go in newspaper!!

We call them chips (until McDonalds took over the world) - they are real potato and not some substitute stuff that McD's use.

goes back to old tyms when they first brought them out as newspaper was cheap but now they are wrapped in the papper they are wrapped in due to absorbs the oil well and is very insulating terefore keeping the fish and chips hot and preventing grease coming out.

they're not, fish and chips are, fries aren't anything like 'proper' chips. Cos it was a cheaper option years ago. Chippies don't do it anymore, they use plain paper as health and safety banned the use of newspaper cos they said it was unhygienic.

Newspaper make great insolation material and keeps the food warm for a longer period. It also keeps frozen stuff cooler for longer.

The paper absorbs excess oil, allows steam to escape and yet keeps the heat in. All of this adds up to hot and crispy fish 'n chips.

tradition, but i havent seen newspaper used for a long time, pity, cos it added to the taste ! lol
