Recently I attended a birthday party, and the mother of the boy, removed his name from the birthday cake prior to cutting the cake. When asked why, all she said was "the ladies at the office do it"....when pressed for a real answer, she seemed upset.
So, other than the obvious "follower" comment, has anyone any clue as to the meaning of this ??? Where did it come from? Whats the meaning and or purpose?

This is done in China, right before cutting the cake. They believe harm will cone to the person if their name is demolished by cutting and eating.

thats considered disrespectful to wipe off someones name from their own birthday cake....its like saying that their birthday is just another day, that there isnt anythng special behind the day. its always polite to cut around the birthday boy or girl's name because the name is supposed to be the last slices cut....unless it is a picture cake than the face should be cut last and the background cut first. but wiping off the name is a big slap in the face

Never heard of that. No idea why she would act do anything of that nature. The name is left on the cake and that slice is served to the birthday person.

Sounds really weird - almost like voodoo. Like she's afraid to cut the cake while the kid's name is still on it, because that would really be cutting him... Having said that, if the boy's mom does something just because everyone else in the office does it, she needs to get her head checked.

I do that for more than one reason:

It is usualy hard to cut and is easier to cut the cake when removed.

My son would love eating it himself, makes him feel specialy treated inhis birthday.

When it is not edible, then it has to be removed.

she couldn't afford a b'day cake and had to buy the one on display (with someone else's name on it).
was dad there? if not, maybe he was supposed to get the cake and didn't show up.
maybe she had pms

I have always wondered this and thought it was to give the birthday person a momento of their day.name.

She probably did it because it was someone else 's b-day too and their name wasn't on the cake.
