People have been eating raw fish before time and now you can get tapeworms from it? people eat raw ground chuck, raw eggs, ...and plenty of other disgusting things you can die from. Truth is bacteria only starts growing on raw meats when it hits a certain temperature (danger zones are different for fish, poultry, beef, and pork) . If its cold enough, the bacteria won't grow and if its hot enough it wont grow either. So I guess if you go to a crappy sushi bar, or make it yourself and aren't experience with how to prepare food or cook for that matter; you'll probably get sick. I like california rolls which are considered sushi and contain imitation crab and veggies. can't get tapeworms from veggies or fake fish. I've also had sushi and caviar. its all pretty tastey if you know what you are doing.

Sashimi and Nigiri are only as safe as the vendors from which you get it. Here in America, there is an implied trust between the vendors and the customers, based on the assumption that the vendor is properly licensed and in compliance with local health departments.
The problem arises when the restaurant works outside of those guidelines and regulations. If the food is brought in from an unsafe supplier, or if the food is mishandled (at any point), then it presents a potential risk to the consumer.
With respect to sushi specifically, but all foods in general, "Caveat emptor," Let the Buyer Beware. Be aware of any foods from a vendor who looks unsanitary or who you suspect is not in compliance with health ordinances.

Umm, tape worms come from the intestinal tracts of mammals and can also be found in fleas. I have yet to hear of sushi made from anything other than seafood, vegetables, and rice. So, I doubt tape worms are a real threat. If you're concerned about eating raw fish, there are plenty of sushi items made from smoked (cured) fish, cooked fish, and all vegetables. You're missing out on a wonderful thing.

I love sushi! It's one of the best fingers foods on earth. Of course there's a risk so you have to ask questions before you go to a sushi place. Ask the chefs when the fish come in, how good the quality is, how fresh is it, questions like that. I'm not worried. I'll still eat it.

except there is a very small amout of raw fish in sushi... sashimi is chunks of fish, sushi is fish and veggies and seaweed w/ rice- most dont even have raw fish. And that tape aorm thing, very true however, salmon, tuna, eel are the only raw fish usually found in any kind of sushi and dont count. the crab, lobster, shrimp in sushi is pre-cooked.
I LOVE SUSHI!!!!!!

no that's only isolated cases if individuals don't pick the right kind of fish. idon't hear any japanese falling flat on their backs from tapeworm poisoning. sushi is fun and it's food. don't worry about it. there are more concerns than tapeworms in many pther types of food...are you going to avoid food forever?

I love Sushi !!!!! The whole Sushi Menu even the Sashimi[the raw kind]). I have to get a physical(whole) for my job, and no worms of anykind have been found.
Trust me, if you are in a good sushi restaurant(which most of them are), you are in safe hands. Enjoy the different kinds of food, and love in different cultures. :-)

Sushi - Yum!! I make my own and guarantee that all ingredients are fresh or use cooked ingredients, that gets rid of tapeworm. Or make them from vegetables, the list is endless.

Oh well. I love it anyways. You can get lots of nasty stuff from pretty much anything you eat. I got the worst case of food poisoning from prepackaged salad. So there ya go.
