No you do not need to have warts present to spread HPV. It's more likely spread through sex when no physical symptoms are present.
For example, men can have HPV for years and not realize it. Since there is no test for men to detect HPV, they often have it for years and years without having any symptoms of it, like warts. These men can spread it to other women and men for years not realizing they have the virus.
I have had HPV for over 5 years now. I got it from a guy I had slept with ONE time. He did not have signs or symptoms of the virus like warts. I developed genital warts from my HPV about 8 months ago. It took me 4 1/2 years to develop them and I could have easily passed it to other men during those 4 1/2 years if I didn't know I had the virus.
***Also, I don't know why tdm1175 says it is NOT an STD, it is VERY much an STD. HPV is usually spread through sex, so obviously it is an STD.

NO! The most vulnerable time to spread HPV is when there are no current symptoms of an outbreak, because this is the time when a person believes nothing is wrong with them. It is just like the herpes virus....about 70% of people are infected when their partner has no signs or symptoms of an outbreak. To avoid speading HPV and im assuming you mean (genital warts), you must take extra precaution because you may still infect others.

First, understand that although it's classified as a STD, it's not. Men carry the virus and women get the effects of the virus. Second, there are three forms of Human Papilomas Virus which are warts, dysplasia and cancer so your doctor needs to clarify which form of HPV it is and precautions to take.

By no means at all. No this STD will eventually be everywhere. My doc told me that like every 1 outta 3 patients she sees has it. Just try to pick one partner and keep him/her for life.
