Overweight causes the insulin to not work properly in transporting glucose (cell fuel) thru the cell wall . Thus obesity can promote diabetes in some patients and high consumption of sugars can promote obesity ,but sugar itself has nothing to do with the mechanism of diabetes as a entity . All foods are converted to sugar (glucose) by the body to differing degrees and glucose is the only energy source used by the brain .
Genetics is the largest determinant of diabetes and if the tendency is inherited ,then poor eating practices can cause the manifestation of the disease.

Diabetes is not caused by you eating too much sugar, it is caused by your body not being able to produce its natural insulin to break the suagr down tinto energy. There are however complications when you do eat too much sugar you are making your body and organs work harder to break it down and either use it or pass it out of the body.
So my answer would have to be NO.
