Is it true it goes away or you have it for life? I have done so much research that some people say it goes away(including my own doctor and online) and some say it will stay there forever said some doctors online and other people online. Some have said if you immune system is strong enough it will fight off the virus. That is why women under 30 dont get hpv test when they get a pap smear because it will eventually go away in most cases. What is true? Does it stay forever or can it eventually go away?

The truth is most people DO get rid of the virus. The ones who can NOT get rid of the virus are typically the people who have strains that can cause cancer or warts. If a person has one of those strains they usually do NOT get rid of the virus.

There are over 100 different kinds of HPV and most don't do anything and clear up on their own. A handful though, can cause cancer including cervical cancer, anal cancer, penile, and head and neck cancer. A handful also causes warts including genital warts, hand and feet warts.

I was diagnosed with HPV when I was 26, when I was evaluated & treated for Stage 1 cervical cancer.

The virus is a sexually transmitted disease; it lives in the cervical tissue as well as the head of men’s' penises.

It is impossible to get rid of; you will carry the virus forever and you can never get rid of it, but it will most likely remain dormant. As an example: when you have chicken pox, you will FOREVER have the vericella virus in your body, but you'll probably never experience another outbreak, unless you get shingles. Another example is Herpes - it can remain dormant for up to 10 years without any outward symptoms, but the virus is ALWAYS there and there's no way to get rid of it and it is ALWAYS contagious.

This is why it is essential that you get annual pap smears to assess any possible changes in the cervical cells.

Just an FYI, the FDA has advised that girls as young as 8 get the new HPV vaccination because it is assumed that if they're vaccinated early enough they won't be exposed to the virus because again, it IS an STD. In other words, no sex, no exposure.

All that you have stated is true, depending on the person. We do know that now there is a vaccine, which if given to girls before they become sexually active will, in most cases prevent the disease. It is useless after one has the virus. But it is not like it is HIV or AIDS -- it's not going to kill you, although your risk of cervical cancer is greater, but that too is treatable in early stages..... we believe most cervical cancers are caused by HPV. And those changes are obvious to any OBGyn worth his/her salt. So, does it go away? yup, in some women. Is it forever? Yes, also for some women. What you need to understand about any disease and any branch of medicine or any drug is that there are no such things as absolutes..... no test is 100% perfect and accurate, no drug always works, no disease always follows the same course, the same disease will have different symptons in different people, no drug works the same way twice in the same person, even.......helpful??????????????

About 15 years ago, I was 25, and I was diagnosed with it. A few years later, I had an abnormal pap and had to go through and biopsy and and cryotherapy. However, I have never tested positive again. I always assumed that the positive was wrong, because it was done at Planned Parenthood, not at a Dr.'s office. I was told that it would never go away, but have since heard that it can. So, I don't know for sure.

There are many different strains of HPV, some can cause cervical cancer others cause warts. Depending on the type of strain it can go away on its own, or if it is treated it, you can still have the virus just no symptoms.

There is no concrete evidence. It is a relatively new disease. However, it is sometimes misdiagnosed and can go away. However, if it is really the virus it stays with you for life.

It does go away on its own but you should always ask your doctor if you should be tested. It can lead to cancer.
