desjardin, thats not what kosher means..food that fulfills the requirements of Jewish dietary law is the proper definition. and plus its kindof silly to think that an animal has to be killed in a religious way to make yogurt?! thank you to Seven and Joyce though

Kosher gelatin is made out of fish. There is also gelatin that is made out of plant materials such as agar. The reason that kosher gelatin isn't usually made with animals slaughtered in a kosher way is because then so many products such as ice cream, candies and gum would have to be meat. Since a Jew can't have meat and milk together, they would have to wait 6 hours after eating a gummy bear to eat a piece of cheese. It's just not convenient.

Kosher gelatin is made from fish (I called the company that makes kosher marshmallows, hoping I could eat them because I am veg). Vegetarian gelatin is carageenan which is seaweed.
Eams kosher gelatin claims to not be from animals but doesn't hold up to the definitive animal free test. (If you put fresh pineapple in animal based gelatin it won't jell. You can put fresh pineapple into vegetarian gelatin and it WILL jell.)

desjardin is right... part of kosher law relates to slaughtering animals in accordance with said law. I had a friend check with her rabbi a few years ago because I had this same question. He said kosher gelatin could be from seaweed, it could be from fish bones because fish aren't considered meat under kosher law, or in some cases it could merely mean that the marrow used was from an animal that was slaughtered according to kosher law. So, absolutely NO guarantees that it's remotely veg-friendly.

Careful, gelatin can be made from animal byproducts. read the ingredients! Kosher just means that it was inspectd by a rabbi or made in a way that suited Jewish dietary laws. Corned beef can be Kosher. But so can cheese - just dont mix them!

All gelatin is made from boiled bones.

Carageenan is not gelatin but it does the same thing.

Kosher just means the animals were killed in a religious manner. Doesn't mean non-animal in any way shape or form.
