The taco salad is a Mexican inspired dish whereby the classic taco taste is enjoyed in an alternate form. Taco salad is pretty much the contents of a taco on a bed of lettuce instead of a tortilla. Some forms of taco salad are served in an edible tortilla shell bowl.

Taco salad is a modern variation on the traditional Tex-Mex dish. These recipes begin to show up in American cookbooks/magazines in the 1960s.
"Taco Salad. This salad arrived with the Tex-Mex fast-food franchises, which began to pepper the country in the 60s...The man who whetted our appetite for "hot and spicy" was Glen Bell, who opened the first "Taco Bell" in Downey, California. That was 1962. Did Taco Bell originate the Taco Salad? I've been unable to proved it did. Or didn't. The first recipe I could find for Taco Salad appeared in the May 1968 issue of Sunset."

I think it's from Mexico, there are many ways to prepare tacos, but "taco " is the way u roll or fold the tortilla, pita bread, roti or in this case the lettuce and well as u know u can fill the taco with anything u like, if it's a salad one u could use tuna fish, grilled chicken or veggies.
The one someone mentioned above that's it's like a bowl made of corn, is actually called "tostada" and it looks like a big corn chip. On the top u can put beans, chicken, lettuce, slices of avocado and tomato, cream and fresh cheese (nothing like Mty jack), of course u can made them with fish, shrimps, mushrooms. etc.

I am nearly positive that the taco salad is an American concoction. I've never seen anything in mexican cooking that resembles it or could have inspired it. Even things like chimichangas are American in origin though people think are mexican.

I believe it originated from someone who decided that they were gaining weight and needed to start eating more salad.
It's a great loophole. It's a salad, isn't it!? Ha! Yummy!
