IF it's a Peak Flow test then it's just as simple as blowing up a balloon! All you have to do is take a deep breath and blow into a tube. You note the reading on the scale. You do this 3 times and then take an average.

If it's the BIG hospital treadmill and breathing tube thing, it's like a gentle stroll in the park, with a little bit of jogging while you try to breathe in the normal way.

Either way it's no big deal, if the results indicate your lungs are not at peak capacity, then it would bean idea to cut down or cut out smoking. Poor lung function can be an indication of lung cancer, or many other things, all of which an be eased by allowing more oxygen into your lungs

If it's a peak flow test where you blow into a tube to move a pointer and get a reading then the "normal" result veries on your age, sex and height. I do peak flow 3 times every day, but that's because i have COPD. I know that for an 18 year old girl at about 5 ft 4 the reading should be at around 480

As a sufferer of Emphysema, I have had many lung function tests.

There are a range of tests that they do to measure the elasticity of your lungs, how hard you can blow, how hard you can breath in etc

It is really nothing to worry about.

The worse thing about it is that the nurse will push you by saying "keep going keep going, your nearly there".

I cope with this by turning it into a game, trying to beat my last effort, becasue they take three attempts at each test.

I quit smoking 8mths ago, and my breathing and lung funtion tests have improved somewhat.

My partner suffers with a disease called schleroderma which has affected his lungs - he has to have lung function tests quite regularly.
They test every aspect of your lungs - you will do all sorts of activities like walking on a treadmill etc they will ask you to breathe into a machine so that they can see how much air your lungs can hold before and after these activities.
I hope it goes OK....

Normal averages form 80% all the way to oever 100%. I have Cystic Fibrosis and mine is in the 30% range, but I still have a full time job and a husband and we take figure skating lessons. So, just because your PFTs might be low, doesn't mean you can't enjoy life.

I've had two and going for another on Wed.
My New PulmDoc wants one.
My last PFT showed 58% of predicted.
(I have COPD), even though my numbers aren't as
low as some..it causes me considerable shortness of
breath just showering and getting ready for work.

If you are smoking----quit now before you cause further damage to your lungs.
Some people just have more problems with theirs
regardless of the numbers.

I've had a few. Can't remember the 'scores' just that I did well for an ex-smoker.
