I just got done throwing one for my son and it was lots of fun. Here are some of the things I did.
I took dark blue posterboard and painted a giant Death star on it. The children then played pin the blast on the death star! Of course they had to use the force not their eyes! I used neon sticky notes for the blasts!
We had lots of black red and yellow balloons since Darth Vader is my sons favorite character and those colors go well.
For the cake I took cupcakes and placed them on the table in two long lines that crossed near the top. Think of an upside down V with the lines passing the vertex a little. These were light sabers. I frosted the bottom 3 or 4 cupcakes gray and black and the rest were frosted red and green. It looked like Darth Vader's and Luke's light sabers crossed in battle. I actually used that new "light and fluffy" frosting and piped big lines of frosting that connected the cupcakes to eachother, of course I had to color the frosting myself. Of course you have to do this after decorating the table which is a pain.
I went to Border's and got a John Williams Boston Pop's CD that featured Star Wars Music. It played in the back ground during the party and was used for Musical chairs.
We also blew bubbles it was funny to watch the children have bubble battles with eachother. Water guns could also be fun, if you're not opposed to that sort of thing and you know the other parents well.
If you purchase a pinata you could use a toy light saber to beat on it, especially it it's Darth Vader.
If you wish to serve a meal I would recommend "Light Saber Dogs" served with red (the darkside) ketchup or Green (the force) ketchup. With perhaps some popcorn asteroids on the side. With perhaps some dill chip pickles that are Death Star Pickles.

If you have a wal-mart near you, they should carry these really cool Darth Vader Masks in their bakery. They put them on cupcake cakes and large cakes. They are really cool. Those could be some favors you could use. I would save all the toilet paper rolls you could and as an activity let the kids make Light Sabers. Ummm for the table cloths don't buy the expensive star wars tablecloths. Just make your own, take some cheap white sheets and dye them orange first, then spray some red on them for a really cool fire effect and some really neat tablecloths. For your cake try to have it professionally done unless you have the tools to do it. An airbrush gun in this case, is your best friend for the cake. You can do lots of Star Wars effects with an airbrush. I hope this helps.

You could make a simple round pinata and have it resemble the Death Star. Before the party make some light sabers with foam pipe insulation or skinny swimming "noodles". Wrap 4-6 inches from the end with colored electrical tape to make a handle. One red, one black, blue etc. To play, divide the kids into teams to go through a challenge course. Each team will get one "Light Saber". Create tasks for each potential Jedi to accomplish (not too hard) with the light saber in hand. For example: Hit ping pong balls with the light saber, Crawl under a chair tunnel, go down a slide, Roll under a tarp
Pop bubbles with the light saber. Purchase small treats or gifts and wrap them in aluminum foil. Hide them in a sandbox, around the house or in the yard. At the party, let the children dig in the sand, or search throughout your “planet” to find their “moon rocks.” The kids will love the excitement of opening their rocks and finding treasures! You could probably find a picture or poster of Yoda or any character and have it blown up to size if need be and play pin the light saber (tail). You can probably find little character rings or models and place one on each cupcake. Or if you are crafty make chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing or make your own black icing and put white icing "stars" on each to make it look like space.
To make favors, get a McDonald's Happy Meal box and carefully open it so that you can trace the cut out on to posterboard. Fold each one into a box and paint it to look like the galaxy, or decorate them with Star Wars stickers, just get creative with it. Make red punch and call it Jaba the Hut juice. Make sandwiches and cut them to resemble fingers and call them alien fingers or say that they are Luke and Darth's fingers (there hands were cut off in the movies) Hope this helped to get your juices flowing.
