Why are black-eyed peas called peas? Aren't they really beans?

They sure look & taste like beans! What's the difference between a pea & a bean, anyway?

They grow inside of pea pods. Both are legumes. They differ in much the same way a peanut which is also a legume differs. They are in the same family in other words, but different.
