for our sorority, our social chair did a theme called around the world. she did a five course dinner and every course was from a different country with a different type of drink. there was an appetizer, a salad, main course, side dishes, and a dessert. it was very cool and nice to try so many different things all in one meal.

Am not so sure about the "class quotient" on this one but it is a great theme for coordinating everything for a big group in terms of food, music, decor -- Cajun or NOLA. Preservation Hall CDs for music, beads on tables, and oh ... the food! Hurricanes to drink, grilled sausages and fish, red beans and rice, corn pudding, braised red cabbage. End with flaming Bananas Foster from Brenans or just pralines and coffee. Recipes are available online. Most of the dishes hold very well just the grilled sausages and fish at the last minute.
Are you a guy with a sorority?

Hmmm....

Egyptian theme - and the food is FANTASTIC. It is also fairly cheap to hire a local belly dancer for an hour long performance - try local dance studios.

Have everyone lounge on pillows on the floor, eat yummy Egyptian food, and enjoy the performance. Then end the meal with a hookah, and flavored tobacco. (that's optional, but it's very much a part of the mood) You can print menus, and use hyroglyphics to decorate the menu. Matter of fact, you could even find some handmade paper from a local artisen and either hire someone or hand-write menus yourself. You can make headdresses. If you have a couple of friends that owe you a favor, ask them to dress up, and 'fan' your guests, bring food, pour wine, etc. Since Cali has got a GREAT selection of fruits and veggies, at cheap prices, you can serve grapes, marinate olives (the real ones, not the crappy canned ones), whatever.

The theme can be as simple or extravagant as you like.

Why not to Spanish tapas? Tapas are basically small portions of various foods.

Here are a couple of good sites for easy recipes:
http://www.ericweisstein.com/fun/wine/tapas.html
http://www.chefnorm.com/tapas.html

You could do this buffet style by setting small plates at various stations .People go around and take small "tastes" of things. You could have Spanish guitar music playing in the background and the color scheme of red and black. Any flamingo dancers around for entertainment? If wine is an option you may want to invite a representative from a wine shop to set up Spanish wines for a wine tasting to go along with the great food....or match the proper foods yourself and have them set by the proper foods.

OLE' Have fun!
