if you test at 6 months, 12 months and 18 months and still come up negative, you're pretty much in the clear. Tests used today are a lot more accurate and can detect the virus sooner than they used to be.
In the meantime, don't have sex at all unless it's protected every time!

Yes, they recommend you getting tested on a regular basis. There's been cases where a person has been infected for years, yet it hadn't shown up in tests. Of course the technology has improved quite a bit since then, but I would say to continue getting tested every 6 months to make sure. And just remember that statistic that 1 out of every 4 people don't know they have HIV, so you never know who you're dealing with. Play it safe everytime.

Hello,
Hiv is usually detected on average 22 days, most of them would be detected after 3 weeks of exposure while most of them are detected 6 weeks after but the doctors who i have spoken with about hiv, say wait after 45 days of exposure.
There are several times of tests used to detect early hiv and measures can be taken.
PCR, is used to detect the actual hiv
P24, is used to detect the antigen, which appears qucikly than the antibodies
Antibody test, used to detect anti-bodies
3 month is considered conclusive, except the following apply to you
You have an implant or blood tranfusion or you have cancer who is taking chemotherapy which supress the immune system.
Take care

At 3 months, the test is most likely accurate. It is recommended to be tested again at 6 months to be sure.

Like anything some people can be carriers and never know they have hiv and it never shows up in a test.
Also, sometimes the tests are negative but you could have it ten years or more before it shows up on the tests.
So here's the deal....always use condoms so you don't have to worry yourself sick about it.

you should be tested twice one 6 months after the other to really make sure that you dont have it....because it take sometimes 6 months for HIV to show any signs...

It never hurts to get tested anytime! But when an employee at a hospital has a blood exposure, generally they will test them for a year in the way you stated. Better safe than sory though.

it used to take 6 months but they may have gotten better. i think you are fine but need to keep the testing up as a regular habit if you are going to have unprotected sex.
