Sounds like a server, but they could also be cross training. Some places have their servers take turns, and usually don't have an actual hostess except during peak hours. Believe me, the money is way way way better as a server.

You are going to be a server. It takes more training time to be a host.

I think you should ask, rather than guess what they are planning to teach you in the next five days. As a rule, the hierarchy is the guy (or gal) who sets the tables, then the server, then the host. But each place is different, so ask them. They won't be insulted. If anything, they'll be happy that you are that interested in your job.

Just because your first few nights didn't go as well as you may have wanted them to doesn't mean that your managers and every thing don't like you. Most schedules are (or at least SHOULD and are SUPPOSED to be made in ) two weeks in advance. They probably just want you to calm down and then they will put you back out (serving) when they is someone to be with you a few more times or working on giving you less or smaller tables while you work your way up. **At least while you are hosting/hostessing you can watch (while still doing your job of course) They probably just want to make sure you have someone near or with you the next time you serve tables. Bonus points to you for being able to feel bad if you were rude to someone AFTER they were rude to YOU, FIRST. You are a wonderful human being. That could never be me. I might not be 'rude' completely, but I def wouldn't kiss their tuchas (pronounced "tuh-kus"; I heard it off The Nanny (with Fran Drescher) tv show).

Were you told how to place people? or were you told where the plates and such were fond? If the first ,you're a Host. 2 You're a server. They may train you for both and see what suits you more.

I doubt that they are going to start you off as a host (you usually have to gain some seniority at the restaurant before you are promoted to host)...though I could be wrong. If they are training you, you are probably starting as a server. Good luck!

They will be training you for BOTH those positions, and will probably show you how to bus tables as well. They might need you one night as a hostess and other nights as a server... eventually you will most likely be a server and enjoy those nice big tips. As you get experienced, you'll serve more and more.
