I have broken my ribs 5 times, each time after steroid therapy for COPD. I'm just curious to know if anyone else can relate to this?

I went through this with my mom before she passed away. The steroid therapy can cause your bones to become more brittle and break easily. Be careful and best wishes!

Actually, i broke a rib from a hard coughing spell before I was placed on steroids. I used to have COPD but that issue has been resolved. I am still on steroid therapy and chronic steroid use can cause bones to become brittle. Talk to your Doctor about Calcium and Vitamin D supplements. Also Fosamax and miacalcin may help with this problem. You may also want to talk to your doctor about dexa scan. This is a very simple X-ray type of tst that measures bone density and is normally done anually to track bone loss.

Not ribs but fell down some stairs and broke my tail bone,
I thought it strange, I am well padded ,
I too was on Steroids at the time and pretty much have been for the last couple of years. My pulmDoc is weaning me off prednisone....slowly.

Yeah steriods rob your body of its ability to build bone mass. I have been on steriods many times for Cystic Fibrosis and it has left me with borderline osteoperosis. If you want to rebuild bone mass, you should STAY AWAY from the darker sodas as they contain phosporic acid that leach calcium from your bones. Take a calcium supplement with vitamin D and participate in weight bearing exercise as often as you can. Also, next itme you have a flair up, you might ask if there is an alternative treament.

It's not totally unheard of to break ribs and/or pull muscles from coughing so hard. Could this be what caused it?
