Veggies are an important part on a healthy diet. You can not get adequate nutrients without each of the 4 food groups. A healthy vegetarian diet is possible, but you must eat a lot of different foods to replace meats. I have seen healthy vegetarians even vegans! Good diets without meat or dairy, can be accomplished by adults, with a lot of research. Even in vegetarian or vegan families children usually consume some meat and dairy.

In response to chilixa, that's probably very true. Of course, the average American diet isn't very healthy at all, lots of junk in there. Also, veggies are often healthier, but that ignores that they are rarely drinkers, smokers or eaters of large amounts of junk food, which obviously effects the results. A good veggie diet is no healthier than a good meat eating diet. It is also worth noting that fortified foods or supplements need to be taken to equal a meat eating diet. A poorly planned veggie diet can be very unheathy though.
But in response to the question, yes they are food, humans are omnivores, not carnivores.

I'm in the best of health - which is more than I can say for most of the meat eaters around me(their idea of a healthy intake of veggies is a tablespoon-full of canned green beans to one side of the big steak on their plates, along with white bread and maybe some deep-fried potatoes).I eat very well, with an eye toward good nutrition.Yet I'm considered the weirdo. If I'm seen as peculiar - so be it.

I see a healthy vegetarian every time I look in the mirror. We live longer than you do; that must mean something.

somebody asks this EVERY day. anyway, vegetarians do NOT need to take supplements to equal a meat diet. AND why do you care what other people are eating anyway?

People on regular vegetarian diets are healthier than people on normal American diets. See happycow.net. People on twinkies, potato chips, and cola diets, while vegetarian, haven't gotten the full message yet.
