As is true with any medication, Byetta works for some and not for others. It's primary action is to slow the absorption of food from the intestine. This allows for more stable blood sugars if you are eating a balanced diabetic diet. One side effect is weight loss, because you feel full longer after you eat as the stomach doesn't empty as quickly.

I have seen this medicine, talked with the drug reps for it, and seen the results. Byetta is an incretin mimetic, meaning it mimics incretin. Incretin is a protein that stimulates insulin release when food is in the gut. It has nothing to do with the absorption of food. The 2 main selling points of byetta are 1) no hypoglycemia (no food in gut, no insulin release) and 2) weight loss. Most of the patients I saw did very well on it, including losing weight (not a drastic amount though).

Yes. I am diabetic. I am not taking it, but a friend is. She says it works great. She has type 2 diabetes...I am type 1 and I do not know how well it would work for type 1.
