Dental dams were first used after the AIDS virus first appeared, in the 1980s, and have fallen out of use since.

They are a small piece of sticky plastic that was put over an oriface [either a vagina or a anus] and used for oral sex. It protected the person giving the oral sex from contracting any diseases.

A dental dam is used by a dentist to isolate the tooth or teeth he is working on, keeps splashing to a minimum and prevents bacteria in the mouth from infecting the tooth further. It is usually made of latex and is not something available to the general public.

Well, dental dam is a square piece of thin latex, much like the latex in condoms, that is used to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) when oral sex is performed on an anal or vaginal opening.

When using the dental dam just stretch it across the vagina opening to prevent exchange of bodily fluids. Dental dams come in plain and flavored latex squares.

Dental dams help to reduce the risk of HIV virus transmission during oral-vaginal and oral-anal sex, in addition to other diseases which can be transmitted from mouth to vagina/anus or vice-versa, including herpes and genital warts.

You look too old to be asking this question. However, it is for making sure body fluid is not exchanged during oral sex. Buy a box (or visit a drug store that carrys them) and read the instructions on using it as they may vary.
