Increased blood sugar is a common side effect of corticosteriods. It doesn't mean the drug made you a diabetic though. Blood sugar levels will return to normal upon discontinuation of the drug. You made be at risk of long term consequences if you're on a long term prednisone therapy following a transplant or other disease that requires you stay immunosuppressed. As of now, there is no clear reasoning behind the cause of diabetics so it would be impossible to directly blame any drug or therapy. Because Type II Diabetics is slow progressing has shows little to no actute symptoms, it's difficult to identify unless your physician does screenings. Your prednisone therapy most likely prompted your physician to check your blood sugar, rather than the drug causing your diabetes.

One side effect of prednisone (among many) is elevated blood sugar. While you are on it, your sugars may go up. However, when you stop the drug you should have normal sugars. It appears that the prednisone "caused" diabetes, but more likely, it simply unmasked a smoldering glucose tolerance problem, and "threw" you in to diabetes. Straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

Oh, and I'm type 1, so, no, prednisone had nothing to do with mine.

Diabetes is not caused by your taking prednisone. It's either type 1, meaning you don't produce insulin and that could have been caused by you flu like symptoms back then or something entirely different. If on the other hand you have type 2 then it's your lifestyle, eating habits and had nothing to do with anything else. Moreover, if type 2, you've had it for a lot longer that you realize, looking at that 560 reading. So, you've joined the club. Welcome and good luck. Do read up and do everything you can to continue the fight against it both for yourself and your community.

My boyfriend developed type 1 diabetes after taking prednisone. Mind you he has NO family history of diabetes and he is 32. Interesting I would say...

Prednisone is a glucocorticoid, meaning it is related to the adrenal cortex and to glucose and immunity regulation. Downs immunity in case of allergies, autoimmune diseases and lowers inflamation. That was why you got it prescribed

Can it cause diabetes in just a week of use? Not by itself. I had used it for two weeks when I had Bell palsy, and I was fine when I finished. But in your case, it could have been the drop that made the water spill out of the glass.

One factor + another factor (for example obesity, not exercising, high carb diet) + prednisone = diabetes mellitus.

Prednisone does not cause diabetes but it may have unmasked yours. You are very lucky to have been under the doctors care then it showed its ugly face to you.
Good Luck and stay in control
