Ok, I am a 20 yrs. old, I have had diabetes for 6 yrs. now and have not been able to control it ever since I was diagnosed. Only when I am in the hospital am I able to control my blood sugar levels. I am type II but insulin dependant due to the fact it is uncontrolled. I live in FL where Medicaid (I have low income and qualify) was denied to me twice because they say I must be under 18, over 65 or pregnant. I am way too young to die and I cannot hold a job when I am always dizzy and fainting due to my illness as much as I have tried, I don't want to seem irresponsible. Is there any loophole as to a person like me getting medicaid in FL? I really am fearing for my life. I just need a temporary boost from the government... If they could only give it to me atleast til my sugar is controlled and I can take it from there and get a job and get my own medications that would be great. I take glucophage, insulin (R and NPH), lisinopril (for HBP and for my Kidneys havent taken any meds in 1 yr.)

Hey girl SOOO sorry to hear your going thru the same crap as I have!! Medicaid is a bit*h FOR SURE Ive applied countless times both in FL & in MI & Ive been denied everytime!!! I like you dont want a free ride just to be able to live everyday w/out the fear of dying from lack of medication!!! Try to contact the manufacturers of whatever brand insulin you use, I know for a fact that NovoDisk, the makers of Novolog have a lo income no insurance plan you get 3 months at a time FOR FREE!!! There is some ppr work you have to fill out of course & youll need a Rx from a Dr but it WAY WORTH IT!!! Also try the HEalth Deptmnt in your area, they will at least be able to get your meds & syringes at a lower cost if not for free, also look into lo income clinics a lot of times they are supplied by donations & can provide you w meds cheap or for free....for sure though contact your manufacturers almost all of em have ahelp program now especially as diabetes in on such a huge rise in our country!!! Best of luck and feel free to contact me ANYTIME for help or just to vent , I too have alwasy had a very hard time controlling my sugars!!! BEST OF LUCK!!!

Oh my gosh...sweetie that is horrible. I am a type I diabetic and I cannot imagine how hard it would be to not have my insulin on a daily basis.
You are so young. (I'm 23). But don't you have any close family that can help you?
You cannot go on without insulin or without your meds for kidney damage and hypertension.
If I were you I would go to a low cost clinic for advice and guidance. And family...you must have someone. And yes, go talk to the Medicaid people face to face.
In the mean time, always keep some form of sugar with you in case you go low. Watch your diet and exercise...that is NOT a long term solution...so please see help ASAP.

Edited to add: Auggie is right. Type II diabetes can be controlled (not cured) but controlled with diet and exercise. Again...it's not a cure or a long term solution...but it will help you get on track again. Exercise will help you lose weight and will help you with your hypertension. Even a good balanced diet...low sodium especially for the HBP.
But still get to a clinic ASAP!!!!

Edited one last time I promise: You used to live in NY. I assume you were able to get by in NY? If it really comes down to it maybe you should move back to NY. If it ain't happening in Florida then you need to get back to NY pronto and get on whatever aid you were on before. America is the land of oppourtunity. You just have to search hard and dig deep. Help is out there.

Go to the health department. They have pamphlets that will tell you how to apply for free or reduced rate medications. There are also clinics that can help you with your medication needs. Get the phone book out and begin calling.
Make sure you are following a diet and exercise routine as prescribed by your doctor. I am not trying to be rude but Type II diabetes is usually associated with obesity. If you follow the diet and lose weight you will find your sugar will stabilize. Good Luck.

Please, please, please... contact the companies that make the medications you need. Virtually all major drug companies now have programs for people who can not afford the medications they need. They should all have web sites or you should be able to find contact information online. Also, find out if there is a teaching hospital in your area. If there is, they should have low cost or free clinics. A county clinic will get you basic medical care, but a teaching hospital may get you into an endocrinology clinic where you can get the very best care for your diabetes. Don't wait, please. Getting control of your diabetes now will greatly improve your chances for avoiding complications and living to a ripe old age with working kidneys, both feet, good eyesight... in other words, all your parts and pieces. It will take some effort on your part to find the clinics and drug company programs, but it will be worth it.

First, if you are feeling dizzy, go to the hospital. They are not allowed by federal law to turn you away because you are unable to pay. While you are there, ask them about a drug program. The hospital social worker will have the information necessary to get you the stuff you need. Good luck sweetie.
