There's no way I can give you an exhaustive list of vegan foods, but, there are load of vegan cookbooks out there. You might want to pick one up so that you can get an idea. Basically vegans eat nothing that comes from an animal. This means no eggs, dairy, or any type of animal flesh.

You should find out how strict he wants you to be. I assume that caseins and lactose ingredients are ok, but is a pasta sauce that has a small amount of Romano cheese, but still is lower in fat ok? Of course, you wouldn't add any parm or cheese to the pasta, but it would be something to ask. You can eat any vegetables, there are vegan garden burgers, tons of mock meats, soy & tofu based foods, tempeh, and tons of grains. Grains meaning rice, quinoa, couscous, bulgar, etc.

Vegan is especially easy in Asian foods. Trader Joe's sells a fabulous island terriyaki sauce. Pan fry some tofu in a soy sauce marinade, drain it, sautee/wok some frozen sitr fry veggies, add the tofu, add the sauce, serve over rice.

Mediterranean foods can also be easy. Buy some pita bread, hummus, tahini, cucumbers, bell peppers, portabella mushrooms, asparagus, lettuce, spinach, hot peppers if you like them and couscous. Open the pita bread and spread in the hummus. Add sliced veggies, lettuce, and spinach (raw or sauteed). Drizzle tahini on it. Serve with a side of couscous.

Since it's summer, are you a BBQ person? As I mentioned, there are vegan 'burgers' that you can buy, but a portabella mushroom marinated in a nice balsamic vinagrette and BBQed is fantastic. Serve with some soy cheese on a whole wheat bun and all the condiments that you can handle (obviously no mayo or ranch dressing).

PS - feathereafter is uneducated and spreading her assumptions rather than facts. "As far as I know, there's many many reasons to eat meat and it's unhealthy to omit it" It's not unhealthy to omit meat. It's actually INCREDIBLY healthy, especially to diabetics, obese or overweight people, those prone to particular cancers, and those with high blood pressure/heart disease.

Good luck to you!

I'm a dietitian and a vegan, so you can email me if you want. A vegan diet won't necessarily help you lose weight, although it might help you to cut out some extra calories. And, you don't want to lose weight too fast. Slow weight loss of 1-2 pounds a week is better. If you lose weight faster than that, your body will go into "starvation mode" and will burn calories much slower to try to keep your body fat. This will make it harder to lose more weight and it will make it much more likely that you will gain back all the weight that you lost. So please, take it slow.

It is also important to exercise often, to keep your metabolism up. Having more muscle also helps to burn more fat. And, you want to make sure that you're not losing muscle through dieting. Try 45 minutes a day. You can even break it up into 3 15-minute sessions, if that helps.

Exercise and taking in fewer calories will help you lose weight. You don't have to go vegan, although it is a very healthy lifestyle and good for the environment. Vegans do not eat any animals products, meat, diary, or eggs. They DO eat whole-grain pastas/breads, fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, nuts, and soy products (soy milk, tofu, veggie burgers etc). There are many great websites with tons of vegan recipes. I like veganchef.com

Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

Did you say a doctor?? Any doctor recommending such a diet would be disbarred. You better get a second opinion from your parents doctor. If a doctor did in fact give you a diet to follow, he would have given you written instructions with lists of foods and recipes. Are you just jerkin chains.

A doctor recommended VEGAN? That's unusual, to say the least. You need soy more than anything else. Have fun. He should have recommended a complete diet and a dietition to go with that prescription; go back and get one if he didn't.

i've never heard of a doc recommending going vegan, but there's a first for everything.

anyhow, there will be no meat, no dairy. welcome to morningstar farms foods and soy milk. fast food will become something of a memory, except for a few select foods. there is a section on the vegan for life site that will help with that.

If I were you, I'd go to a bookstore and buy a vegan cookbook. There are all sorts of recipes out there for all different kinds of food. Lots of Eggplant will be eaten.

i am actually shocked that a doctor recommended that diet for weight loss. i'm not against vegan diets at all, but doctors tend to recommend foods from all groups. but i can tell you that hummus is a great snack option for you. also, black bean burgers are wonderful. i have a really good recipe for those.

I suggest you find a good vegetarian Indian restaurant (or order from that section of their menu) if you want to eat anything flavorful. You will still need to avoid dairy and eggs (if you truly aren't allowed to eat those either).

um, I'd get a second opinion if I were you. As far as I know, there's many many reasons to eat meat and it's unhealthy to omit it. Always listen to your doctor, of course, but, unless there's a specific reason you can't eat meat, I'd get a second opinion. There's a lot of healthy diets that you can lose weight on, without eating only veggies.
