Heart palpitations by definition are a symptom - that is something that can not be overtly observed by someone else rather a sensation that a patient reports. As others have mentioned it is a fluttering, a thud, an extra exuberant beat, pounding, irregularly beating or a whole variety of other sensations that a patient will subjectively report regarding their heart. Palpitations as mentioned above are a symptom and therefore do not mean anything until it is documented what might be causing them. It is sort of like having a patient come in and say they have arm pain. Think of all of the things that might cause arm pain - its a long list for sure.

The type of palpitations you are referring to are called PAC's (premature atrial contractions). They are very much influenced by worry, lack of sleep, stressful circumstances, too much caffeine, etc. Often they resolve by simply reversing the above. Nonetheless, if your palpitations are associated with other symptoms - like shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness, sweating, and chest pain, then you should seek medical care. If on the other hand you are having a few flutterings under especially stressful circumstances with no other symptoms - they almost certainly will resolve without intervention and are harmless.

It is always good practice to seek a professional opinion if in doubt.

Good luck.

Usually with palpitations there is some shortness of breath, and perspiration. Stress can be a big factor. You could also be experiencing a panic attack. See your doctor if you have any more concerns.

you can feel palpitations which feel like a "fluttering in your chest" They are usually harmless and most of the time are due to stress, too much caffeine, nicotine.Negative thoughts or thinking can certainly trigger palpitations.Regardless you should make an appointment with your doc and have a sonogram, stress test, and an EKG to rule out heart disease.

Heart palpitations are a funny thing.
I could be something completely harmless, like to much caffeine.
But the problem is that you can't know unless you get checked out.
There is a potentially fatal disorder where your heart "skips beats" and if it gets bad enough you could die from it.
That's why they always tell you to get it checked out if you are having palpitaitions.

If you have a rapid, irregular heartbeat, you will notice that your pulse is not steady. You will feel "skips" in the beat and it will be faster than normal. Arrythmia is usually caused by a slight structural or neurological problem in your heart. If it doesn't correct itself quickly and you get lots of episodes you could be at risk for a stroke (it can cause clotting) so see a doctor about it. They will make you wear a 24/hour monitor to determine how many times it happens and what type of Arrythmia you have.

A fluttering feeling in your chest that's accompanied by fast or irregular pulse. Could be associated with slight dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath. You can also experience heart pounding.
