We are told we have democracy and freedom when we do not, mainly so the capitalists can keep us pacified, get richer, and send our children to war. We are a republic, a corrupt one at that, and when was the last time you felt free?

Socialism requires a centralized government controlling all aspects of the economy, including where and when you work and for how much. Democracy is rooted in the ideals of personal freedom, and the idea that individuals can choose what is best for themselves. Market-based capitalism, even with all its problems, is rooted in the same ideals. Socialism on the other hand is based on the theory that the government, not individuals, know what is best for the individuals and society as a whole. It's possible that socialism and democracy could coexist, but unlikely since they're based on opposing ideals, and it probably wouldn't be very long before one overpowered the other.

Capitalism is a economy principle. Democracy is a political principle. They are not 'married' to each other, that's just the way the US happens to work. There are many democratic socialist countries in the world---many of the northern European counties have governments that are essentially socialist (certainly more left-wing than anything in the US), have democratic elections, and have some of the highest education and standards of living in the whole world. Sweden, Denmark---great places.

Who had the biggest economy 200 years ago? Who has it now? What happened? The US embraced free markets better than other nations and became a super power as a result.
Social Democracies are stagnant economies, check out their results. I don't make the rules, I just try to learn and apply them.

Because socialism deals with extensive government control of the people and the economy; it is very hard for there to be a free market (capitalism) because the government replaces the invisible hand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_hand) that drives a capitalist economy and society.

For starters, the US is a republic, not a democracy.
Democratic socialism can be summed up like this:
WE voted to take YOUR money.

Because the capitalists have all your money and they control the media who control the democracy.
